Dont get the salvage car.
IMO, gas mileage isn't the reason to get an S2K, i only get 18-20mpg normal driving mixed. about 225miles to a tank. My S4 (which has a v8) gets that and more. So at $50 a fill, not the most economical car to drive.
I couldn't tell you specifically what rpm i shift at while casually driving, but if i were to guess, maybe 4500, before vtec.
If i remember correctly, 77mph is just about to cross into 5000rpm, and its getting loud at that point.
Just get the car checkout b4 you buy it, have them drain the trans and diff and make sure that fluid isn't full of nasty metal bits. If you dont feel any problems while shifting between the gears, and dont hear any noises coming from the rear your most likely ok.
you can always have the oils analyzed by Blackstone Labs if you really had a motivated seller willing to give you that kind of time.

i prolly spend $50 a week.....thats city driving (around 220-225).....highway i get about 25-27...and thats because the speed limit is 70 and then its 80.....
if you want gas milage i would go with another car...

as for daily driving i try to keep my revs inbetween 2.5k and 3k

Agreed, I tend to shift in boring daily driving and commuting at about 3-3.5k anything above that (unless I'm intentionally wanting to be in the VTEC powerband) I only go up to 4500-5500 before shifting.

Gotcha. I'm prolly gonna ditch the salvage car. It does have a nice ring tho..13K, <20K miles.

I just have to play the waiting game now: first, save up a couple more grand, then wait for a seller whose selling the S I want.....a white s2k + hardtop would be hella nice. <40K miles also..

wow, 80mph @5K? damn! LOL its crazy for me cuz it'd be 80 @ 3K on my camaro..

I know it'll just take getting used to, but I just wanted a ballpark 'loaf' figure...

Don't count on a lower redline to do that. Idiot proofing takes a whole lot more than just that. You'd have to keep the idiot out of the car for starters...

I don't have set RPM's. It's based on feel and other conditions. Am I accelerating? Am i passing? Am I going uphill? Am I trying to save on gas until the next payday? There aren't any set rules for what RPM to shift at.

It's an S! It's a high revving engine. Drive it and you'll get a feel for it pretty quickly. 1.5-2K shifting might save you some gas but the S probably won't like it. Closer to 3K is my best guess for a starting point to recommend.
Hahaha, thats true...i guess you can wreck any car if you try..

I just wanted a quick check on what RPM I should be expecting...when I test drive and stuff too..dont wanna be all when I'm shifting near my OLD redline!! (5800rpm...lol damn v8's).

3K sounds good. I dont intend on babying it..but I do want to be able to 'save' a little bit of gas when I can..

I guess anything is better than the 10-14mpg I was getting w. the old car....

50 a week is GREAT. lol! I spent 400 a month (100 a week) over the summer. I also live in hawaii...so its not like i drive a LOT...~1000 - 1200 miles a month, even If i go out a LOT..

20-25 is very liveable for me

2.5Krpm..thats not bad...

alrighty guys, just wanted to know...seems like all the s2k;s for sale around my area are pretty much sold...or earmarked for someone..so Its gonna take a bit longer than expected... Its ok. I got all the time in the world....

I havent had a car I liked in two weeks...AND ITS KILLING ME.

I also gotta get into the higher revs mindset... I swear, I'd only shift about 3K If I was racing someone.. shifting at 2.5K on the 'maro meant 10mpg. max. lol

Thanks for the input... any other noob info I should get? I've been reading the FAQ's and its pretty informative... Does make me want to get a s2k even more...hmmm.... two or three more months, MAX. I WILL GET ME A

white s2k with a hardtop.... --I hardly ever see white ones..and I saw 3 in the last two days. ITS A SIGN!

ALRIGHT GUYS. I finally found an S2K...

15.5K for a 52,000 mile 2001 S2K.

Good:
Low miles for the year
CHEAP
black
Dropped (fullsusp)
Extra Rims
Clear Title
Great interior..no rips anywhere!

Bad:
Scratches in paint - where lip kit used to be
Small tear in soft top
back window = opaque
dropped a bit too low for my liking
ROLLED (bad job at it) rear fenders
paint coming off Valve cover (?? brake fluid spill? Idk..)

FINALLY though so I'm not complaining. The other S2's around are waaay off the chart in terms of price and stuff.

I put 10K down, borrowed a little from parents...gonna pay them 3K back in a few mo. and the remainder in installments.

21 with a s2K FTW.

I did get to test drive it, and I gotta say..the people who say its got no torque are crazy! I can drive it around (loafing) easily @ 2Krpm..
well, hope its gonna meet or exceed my expectations.!

I get to pick her up tommorow!

If you search around you can prob find a MY02-03 for $15.5k with the same mileage and excellent condition. You get the glass window, the suspension is a little more forgiving than a MY00-01 and numerous other improvements.

haha, the trouble is..I'm in Hawaii...theres hardly any S2k's for sale..and the ones that are..have eithier HIGH mileage, or are waaay outrageously priced..

I'm pretty happy with the 53K miles, 15.5K...shes not perfect, but I think I can fix her up
