Rolling_stop Introduction
Good afternoon S2ki!
I have been a lurker of this forum for what is most likely the be the better part of the last decade. At one point I had another screen name on but I have long forgotten it and most likely no longer use the email address associated with it. Either way, I'll chalk it up to the years of college partying and the constant borage of useless crap I read on the internet on a daily basis that has lead to me forgetting and the genesis of a new account.
With this new account, however comes my first ownership of a REAL life s2000. In July of 2014 I purchased a MY03 Silverstone S2000 in somewhat questionable condition and relatively high miles.
The story however starts with my previous project, which was a 1995 BMW M3, sort of. When I first picked up my BMW it was a multi-color dysfunctional cluster-f@#k-hack-job project car that I had hoped to give new life as a NASA spec race car. My dreams were quickly thwarted with the discovery of vast amounts of cancer occupying the inner fenders, battery tray (in the trunk and under the carpet) and the engine bay. I quickly started to disassemble the whole car and search for a new shell to throw the perfectly functional S50 drivetrain into.
I find one rather quickly and without a second thought pack my things and drive to Austin, Texas to once again get my project underway. Fast forward to January of 2014 and I had basically done nothing to the shell and only had a stack of parts to show for a year and a half's worth of ownership.
I am a Honda enthusiast through and through and this became more and more apparent every day I owned the M3. Between bazar wiring, strange nuts, bolts and washers and even oddly designed jack points I couldn't find the energy or somehow catch the virus of addiction and motivation to get the car going. Thus, I parted out everything and washed my hands clean of all things BMW and went back to my roots. Honda.
I did learn something from the BMW when it was in running and driving form however; rear wheel drive is silly fun, the overall lack of understeer I was used to in FWD Hondas was a true breath of fresh air and a well designed chassis specifically built for spirited driving made me feel confident and I didn't want to lose these qualities. This left me with only one option. The S2000.
With the money I had collected from the sale of all things BMW I started my search for a S2000. I knew I wanted an AP1 and didn't really care about mileage or little issues as I am very mechanically inclined and would be able to sort out any issues it may have. Once again, it didn't take me long to find the exact car I wanted and genuinely needed for sanity (a year without something fun to drive as a die hard enthusiast is enough to drive a man crazy).
A small dealership in downtown Dallas had a clean title, stock, 142,000 mile, MY03 silverstone S2000 posted for $7,000. I called them the moment I saw it and told them I would be there the next weekend with cash in hand. All of this aside, during the conversation with the dealer I asked a few questions that were pertinent to the sale. Such as, overall condition, broken items, top condition, maintenance records, etc.
Fast forward one week and I'm driving to Dallas. I arrive at the dealership and it is basically as described other than a window regulator not functioning, a few bits and pieces missing and or worn, dirty interior, check engine lights, and it wouldn't rev past 5,500rpm. Either way, I drove six hours and talked him down to $6500, gave him the money and set off on my way.
To wrap this up, since ownership I have done a relatively extensive overhaul on the vehicle and have been in a state of euphoric bliss while driving it ever since. The S2000 combines everything I loved about all of my previous Honda's and adds the divine visceral feel of RWD and a 9,000rpm rev limiter. I have plans of racing this vehicle and am excited to share my experiences with all of you on this board.
