Default Running in?

Hi,

new user and proud new owner of a brand spanker 06 MY.

What is the best / definitive advice on running in? Ive had a couple of conflicting reports on this. One reckons that I should just use it and another that I should I baby it for about 1000 miles.

Would you recomend an oil change after maybe 3000 miles or so?

Im a sales exec for Land Rover and our models all have an advisory baby period of 500 miles. Shall I expect the engine to use oil during its early miles?

Any advice will be most welcome.

3000 mile oil changes are a waste. leave the factor oil in til 4000-7500. in fact, your car has an oil change indicator, so you should follow that. read the owner's manual. this will answer all of your questions, including the breakin questions.

also, do not use synthetic until at least 7500 miles.

Congrats on your purchase!

The S2000 isn't anything different from other cars. You should take it easy in the early miles to let all the "stuff" sit in (no hard braking, no hard acceleration, etc) -- the manual covers quite a lot of that. Or you can do a search S2000 Talk or in this forum for more break-in information.

Of course, when it says don't go over Xrpm before Y miles, it doesn't mean you should floor the car and hit Xrpm and shift for the first Ymiles, then immediately rev it to redline as it hits Y + 1 miles.

Anyway, browse around this site, and don't forget to find your local forum! Local forums are especially good for local meets and information about local shops, etc. The other forums like Electronics and Gallery may also be of your interest as well -- i.e. if you are into gadgets or would like to know if something would look good on your car, etc.

Spend some time to read some of the FAQs and sticky threads in the forums. You'll find a lot of information. I believe this forum has quite an extensive FAQ as well. Of course, don't hesitate to ask questions if you can't find the answer through the search function. In the mean time, take it easy in the early miles and enjoy the car!

P.S. If you don't know where to do in the forum for some stuff, or have questions about how this forum actually works? The Site Info forum is the place to be. Enjoy!

Jasper,

Your first stop is the owner's manual. Give it a cover-to-cover.

In answer to your questions..

1. No VTEC before 600 miles. Vary the revs often, but keep it below VTEC range.

2. Don't change oil until scheduled interval -- 3750 under "extreme" usage and 7500 if not (I recommend going with the extreme interval). Just keep a CLOSE eye on the dipstick at every fill up, and just top off if you go down an X or two. Older cars had more appetite for oil than the new ones, but please just be safe.

3. Don't use synthetic until 10K miles or thereabouts.
