Default thinking about buying s2k

hi all. i'm new here. So please welcome me. haha i'm kidding.

I don't own a s2000. So why do i join this club? Because I am thinking about getting one very soon.

But before I get on it, I wanted to come to experts and ask for opinions.

Let me start out by saying that I did my homework by doing seaches and reading FAQs.

Right now I have a 01 Audi TT. There is a 01 s2000 for sale locally, and I wanted to

ask you if 2001 S2000 model is a good one to get. I have a limited knowledge about s2000,

and I wanted to hear some opinions from you on whether 2001 s2000 model with

about 35k miles (for $19k) is a good one to get.

Please share with me all riding experiences, known problems, recalls if any, and such. Thanks in advance.

HI!!! and WELCOME!!!!

Ok, the unique aspect of this car is that it's a 2.0 Liter engine that churns out 240 HP. Just amazing. But you don't actually see that 240 untill you hit 6,000 RPM. Below 6 grand, it could feel slow if you're used to a bigger engine with alot of low end power.

Me? I love revving it to redline every chance I get. It paints the whole experience of driving a Formula 1 car with the sound, feel and sight as you see the tach reach 9 grand! Shift into second and you get to do it all over again. Read my signature below to see what Car And Driver thinks about it.

There's so much to say about this car, and so many stories to tell. Search through these forums and i'm sure you'll find all of the information you need. Good Luck with whatever car you choose!

what is the major difference between 01 model and later models?

i don't doubt that s2k is an awesome car. i just want to know whether 01 model will still run strong for next few years and for next 100k miles.

Hanshi,

A properly cared for S of any year will run strong well over 100K miles. Welcome to the s2ki.com site and best wishes as you hunt for your car. Consider s2ki.com membership if you want to really join the community here.

There were some significant changes for 2002, including some very welcome interior trim refinements, and a glass rear window for the soft top. There were also some minor suspension tweaks to help control oversteer, but the S naturally oversteers (all years), and that can be an advantage for track or autocross use. I think most people would agree that (all years) it's a "driver's" car.

All of the significant tweaks to the first gen car (pre-MY04) were done by the middle of the 02 model year. I.e., all of the really annoying tech service bulletins (TSBs) were resolved. Honda did its usual job refining the product.

Unfortunately, all the pre-04 engines have an appetite (of varying degrees) for oil. A negligent owner can end up running low on oil (very bad). Your best bet, as you look for a nice used model, is to get a compression test done on the engine. That'll at least give you some comfort that the car wasn't overrev'd and that it wasn't run low on oil for any length of time.

Best wishes.

Try for an 02 or later if you can, but if you get an 01 (or any other year) make sure the TSB (technical service bulletins) were preformed.

FWIW, I wasn't really saying that you should ignore the 00 and 01. Of course, that's your decision. You can get great deals on the earlier models too, so you have to weigh all the factors.
Best wishes.
