Default Thinking of defecting

My current toy is a 93 RX-7 R1. I love the car, but I've always been an s2k fan.
My question is this....given the already high output per liter of the s2k engine, what simple mods can you do to increase horsepower?

A few bolt ons for the RX-7 yields substantial increases in power.
If I want another 40 hp in the S2k am I going to have to spend 5 grand to put a turbo or supercharger on it?
Which brings up another question- which is more commonly used on the S2k? turbo or super?

My first post so be gentle!

Yes, you need to spend big to increase the S's performance. SC or turbo, and different drive gears are the big tickets that will change the car's performance. I've seen more SCs because they are easier to install and I think more reliable.

What really matters is what you want out of the car - its already very tossable and powerful - more power can make it harder to handle.

That's what I was afraid I'd hear. The RX-7 weighs the same (2800) and starts with 15 more horsepower. A few bolt ons and your pushing 300 hp. It's such a rush.
I really love convertibles and my daily driver is a 2001 eclipse gt spyder. I would have bought an s2k if I could have afforded it. The eclipse has a nice v6, but it's heavy and no fun to throw around. If I sell the 7 and the eclipse I could get a nice S2k....

The S is more about driving dynamics and handling than power and straight line performance. Its not weak in the straight aways but it shines in many areas far and above many more expensive cars. It is definately not cheap to mod so plan on having deep pockets if you plan to mod. Although the S can run circles around many cars at a track/autoX in stock trim so don't underestimate it.

I'm learning more and more about the abilities of the car. I have almost All OEM on my car, and I'm finding out that it's really an AWESOME car w/o any power adders. I am SO tempted to add and mod the car, but I have to remind myself that I have yet to out drive it's current OEM setup.

i would have to agree.. power/handling ratio is awsome.. i have yet to maxx out the car .. if i was to do a modd.. it would be simply for the bling / sound/ looking good list..

overall. i think SC'ing my car is down theline for me.. maybe in about 1 yr or so..

There are few bolt ons that yield much power unlike many other engines. If you want to make more than 20HP you need to turn to boost. SC is the most common method and used kits are available for far less than 5K.

The best way to make power on an S2000 is to make it weigh less.

the F20 is tuned amazingly well by honda, but there are ways to get some more hp NA. first, the stock intake is perhaps the best oem intake system made. very effecient and provides the best combo of low and high end power, i suggest just adding a hi-flow filter of your choice. the factory header is much the same way, the only con to the factory header is its wieght. my advice is save your money the stock header is the LAST thing you need to mod in a NA setup. exhaust and tuning are where the hp is. for max peak power any 70mm exhaust system will be the best. for mid range hp/tq stick with a 60-63mm single. some duals will add power, invidia/j's/toda/amuse have really shown to be the biggest power makers for dual. just keep in mind that singles will always make more power than duals, by atleast 6whp or so. test pipes are also a big bang for the buck. on my car i picked up 6rwhp with that mod alone. lastly, ecu tuning. the s2k runs amazing rich at 12.1 AFR. leaning out the AFR and lower vtec by a couple hundred rpms makes the car a whole new animal.

i put 227 to the wheels and run 13.6's at 104 with a KN filter and a custom 70mm headerback exhaust and a vafc tuned. pick your mods carefully and be sure and search the forum to see what makes power and what doesnt. just because it cost 1k dont mean it makes power.

good luck and hope to see ya in a s2 real soon!
