Default Trying to buy a nice used S2K is quite the experience so far...

So out of the dozens of nicely used S2Ks, I find a really great one at a decent price. I contact seller and he says don't waste his time (he is adamant about this) but he is willing to chat... sounds good as I am serious. We chat and stuff and agree on price.

Here is the catch: He lives in another city and is always traveling for work but his buddy would show me the car. I am game and meet up his buddy who is a really cool guy and stuff and knows all about the car. After a ride-a-long (not able to drive it myself), all seems great and I want to move fwd. I go and get a loan, get approved and let seller know but he doesn't have the time to make the transaction with me!?!?! Supposedly always traveling and stuff.

So now, I have to wait until he is available, he doesn't respond that much guess he is busy and wants me to to deal directly with his friend instead? It's like dood really? I want to GIVE you money but you don't want to make the time?

I just don't get it but I am going to try to be patient.

Sounds like a real hard-ass seller. I've encountered a few of these and don't think I'd bother with it even if it was a my dream car. Just keep on looking - they're out there!

I'd move on. I had a lot of fun looking for mine and have chatted with some cool people. You definitely want a good experience, not a mediocre one.

I would not give that guy the time of day. He is being disrespectful to you. Your time is every bit as important as his. This is a bad sign and I bet dollars to donuts there is something negative about the car he has not disclosed to you. Move on.

As far as price goes - my personal feeling is that when you find a really good car that meets your expectations after doing your due diligence you should close the deal fast and be prepared to pay a bit of a premium to make it happen quickly - happy seller and happy buyer. That is the goal.

Ride along? You need to drive any car you're considering buying. If you can't drive a "stick" learn now, not after buying.

Still lots of these cars available. Keep looking. Not sure I'd want to borrow money for fun car that only gets used on nice days and some weekends but that's how I use mine. Roadsters make horrible daily drivers. I know because I'm a slow learner and have done it three (3) times. But not this time.

There are several generations of this car with subtle differences. Be sure you know what you want.

Good luck,

-- Chuck

I totally agree with you guys, pretty sound and realistic expectations from a buying / selling standpoint. He recently agreed to let me drive the car and fully inspect, etc... saying he just didn't want peeps without money to joy ride. I can understand that but I will still need him to meet me half way... the car is great just the experience so far is kinda killing it. If he doesn't want to play his part I will just move on and buy another car.

Ive said it once already but I'll reiterate because I care about you. I still think that buying any car should be a memorable, exciting, joyful experience - especially for the buyer.

There will be other units for sale without the hassle of an annoying, dickish seller. For example, I just bought an AP2 from the 2nd owner, older guy that was so friendly and respectful, told me everything about the car, offered my wife and I lunch at his house when we drove a few hours to get the car....none the less it just felt 'right' if that makes sense. He really enjoyed the car and appreciated the fact the car is going to another enthusiast.

That being said, I've professionally photographed the car and am sending him a framed photo of the car with the the shift knob that he added as a token of my appreciation.
