Astro, this is kind of an open-ended question. There's a million reasons one way or the other. Take a look at the Car Talk forum for lots more discussions of this sort.

Welcome.

I could have bought a whole bunch of cars (used) for the price of my new S.

NSX, Boxster, M3 e36, M3 roadster... but I didn't.

Why?

1. I love Hondas.
2. I've always wanted an S2000.
3. I wanted a new car. (I've learned my lesson; I'm pretty sure all of my cars from now on are going to be used ).
4. I didn't want to hassle with higher milage maintenence, especially on a BMW or Porsche.
5. Honda reliability.
6. Performance to price ratio.
7. The coolness and unique traits that the S2000 offers, digital dash, high redline 4, awesome 6-speed...etc...
8. I don't really care for the stylings of any of the cars I've listed more than the S, except for the NSX.

If I could afford any of the cars I'd mention new I'd take a look at the NEW boxster S, but then I'm in a whole 'nother price range.

As you can see, those were my subjective reasons. There is no doubt in my mind that I picked the *right* car. There is no other car that I'd rather have that I could afford at this moment. I made up my mind with no coersion or input from others...

So for someone to ask why... I say the answers are obvious.

i think the boxster is ugly looking, and the s2000 is a clean looking car that in my opinion blows the socks off of a boxter looks wise. Performance wise, they seem to be pretty equal, but the s2000 is cheeper and more fun to drive than a boxter. I drove a friend's dad's boxter for a day when I was house sitting so I could see the difference. I figure it could be that i like my car better, but it doesnt feel as fun as my car when i drive it.

Well, I also looked at the '97-'00 Boxster and they're about the same range as a used 00-02 S2000 around 17-20 grand. Of course Boxster's handling is awesome too I hear (mid-engine rear wheel drive)...haven't test drove either. Of course for the same price you could get a legendary Porsche! That's just my thoughts. Engine wise....well, I'm sure the higher displacement and lower compression ratios on the Porsche means it doesn't have to strain as hard as the S2000.....

Why would you buy a boxter if it was not an S model? The base model is a waste of money, escpecially compared to an S2. You know why the used prices are so close even though the price of both cars new is so far apart is because the S2000 is the better car and holds its value better.

The answers to the question really from person to person.

Some like the styling more, some judge based on price, some want the lower profile name from Honda, some want lower cost of maintenance (Porsches are reliable too, but parts are more expensive), etc. I could just ramble on with the list ...

For me? The boxster simply wasn't even on the short list of cars (3 other cars) that I was considering. Boxster is certainly a great car, but I don't like how the car feels and the fact that it's a Porsche (too much of a bling for my age).

So why did I choose the S? I really don't know. I couldn't pin point where it's coming from. I just knew it when I saw and drove it the first time.
