However, I've changed a bumper, tail-light, and trunk lid and still come nowhere near 5,000. Find out exactly what was done, and find a GOOD bodyshop to do the inspection.
My bet is that it was the front end. Headlights are very expensive. Also, it's easy to have to replace a wheel and some suspension bits. Add in repainting, and there's your $5K easily.

But what would you do if someone ran into your back bumper or something? I'm very anal about mine too, VERY. You should see my maintenance log, its several pages long and I've only got 19,700 miles. However, sometimes people run into you. If its frame damage then I'd fight till I collapsed to make sure the insurance company totals it out, but if its just body damage . . . what can you do? Sell it every time someone dents up your bumper? In South Florida that is like a yearly occurance, if not more often.

If the car checks out fine I'd say go for it, keep us posted as to what you decide.

If you proceed, have the car thoroughly inspected by a mechanic and body shop. Cars can be repaired, just make sure it's been repaired correctly.

I acut was just reading about that one last night browsing through the for sale post. It's a shame that girl didn't know how to drive. Would def listen to everyone here nothing is free. Sometimes things can seem too good to be true and usually they are. Just use caution and look over that car very thoroughly or get a mechanic to do it. No matter what$19,000 grand is $19,000 grand you don't want to piss that a way for nothing now do you. Good luck with your decision.

Persoanly, no. I would rather have an older car with no history of wrecking. Reason being is that I will always be concerned that soemthing was weakened by the impact and may surface later. That is a great price... but no one gives things away, so there must be a reason for the really low price. Otherwise if it was so mint, they could charge higher... just my .02

I guess it would depend on the kind of recovery work done. If it was done by a reputable shop that wanted the car to be as strong as the day it was born then ya I just might.

Well, the OP's candidate was crashed into a ditch. That's different than bumper taps. The issue is structural damage / weakening. I could never settle for a car knowing that. IMO, it's not worth it.

Well, opinions vary. But I think most of you are way off base. $5K damage is not much at all, and there is no reason why "crashing into a ditch" can not be permanently and totally repaired.
