Header, Exhaust, EMS....
Tarcy,
Even the quiet singles are still loud. But what's worse is that they resonate at certain RPMS making them very annoying to daily drive without a silencer. Since you don't really do any track stuff having a silencer defeats most of the point of getting the single in the first place.
AEM EMS doesn't have a OBDII port. I'm pretty sure most of our emissions checkstops require pulling any emission's check codes. You could swap the OEM ECU for checks, but if you plan any serious engine work you won't be able to do that.
I would suggest getting the E-manage Ultimate (with fuel and timing tuning). Since it's a piggyback, no real emission check hassles. If you don't have an intake, any AEM-like one is good bang for the buck. Go for Toda/Mugen/J's header, used ones turn up every once in a while. They will give a bump in the midrange without any big noise penalties. If you are OK with the noise get a cheap single, the expensive titanium ones only gain you around 20lbs additional weight reduction. Power will be more or less the same. If you don't need the brand name it's cheaper to get an exhaust made in a muffler shop like the Spugen ones. Ultimately, the most you can expect from this 30+WHP and 30-60lbs weight reduction from boltons costing $2500 up to $6000.
You can ride in my or James' car to see what a T1R or J's exhaust sounds like.

Seriously - since you ahve the 4.77s the car IS going to be quieter. The drone is in that 3000-3500 range, and when on the highway, the gears bring the revs a bit higer than that. I was getting annoyed with my T1r70 on the highway, and was scared about the gears but I did them anyway, and to my surprise it was quieter because it was out of the drone rev range.
And... when you can save 700 dollars... I mean you can get an EMS for 800 so there's your money right there.

Grea feedback gents.
Fongu - My only concern is finding someone knowledgeable enough to tune the Greddy E-Manage properly. I know we have Chris Tapp who has tuned just about anything, but I don't think he has come accross an E-Manage system yet? I will have to ask.
As for the exhaust, I have heard sound clips, but would definately benefit from listening to both yours and James' setup, that would definately give me a better idea as to what each one would sound like.

Not all singles are loud -- I have a J's 60RS and it is almost as quiet as the stock exhaust. The ASM exhaust is not loud either, their 70mm sounds nice but at cruising speeds is fine. Spugen, on the other hand, uses Buddy Club mufflers and will be considerably louder, plus it will have more drone and the build quality is inferior. I would definately go with the ASM for what you want to do, but the J's 60RS single is extremely quiet and gains nice power.
I like the advice on the engine tuning though, I would definately go with a piggyback like the Greddy unit over the AEM EMS for the reasons discussed. Also, the AEM EMS has problems with cold starts, something you should take into serious consideration if you live in Canada.
Also, if you're going with a 70mm exhaust the J's header will probably provide the best gains due to its bigger piping, it will have less alteration in flow between the piping. The Hytech is the best bet, but will cost you more money (although he is coming out with an off-the-shelf unit).
