I tried the 9V battery technique last night and it didn't work. Don't know what I was doing wrong... First tried it with one battery and then two and then three. Has anyone actually used this method?

What I did:
(+)-(+)-(+)-knob

(-)-(-)-(-)-knob

EDIT: Just tested all three batteries in series and found out the contraption is still only putting out 9 volts. Damnit, why didn't I pay more attention in elementary science.
