2012 Track Junkie Thread
Just checking in after a long while..with trying to get the business going I can't afford a track day so it just makes me depressed.
But in summary:
- Thanks for guys posting the videos. This thread is all about sharing knowledge and experiences so I like watching them on my lunch break at work.
- The Lemons race looked pretty crazy..that one video of the crash in the Karasseul (sp.?) made me cringe. Glad he was ok!
- I'm starting to dig the CR lip more and more after seeing pictures of Clyd'e car.
- Was that your first event in the Corvette George?
- Thanks Matt for posting the updated list of oil cooler parts!
- Thanks for placing the first order on my website Oleg! Glad you got your mounts in. If you want to get the diff mounts as well, just give me a shout.
- If anybody was thinking about a Stoptech bbk or wants anything Stoptech, let me know by July 31 as I have some special pricing going.
- That is all.

The reason I ordered the AN fittings and hose from Summit is i don't know exactly which fittings (angles) i will end up using so i intentionally ordered extra fittings. Summit has a much better return policy than racerpartswholesale but doesnt sell Mocal or Setrab parts. Also, you MIGHT be able to get away with 10' of hose, but i got 15' to be safe. Summit sells 15', RPW only sells 10' and 20'.
EDIT - installing it the way I did, I used well under 10' of AN hose. Order 10' and you will have plenty.
You can go cheaper if you are ok with the typical blue and red AN fitting colors, but i wanted black.
I spend a ton of time looking at whether or not to get 10 or 12AN fittings. I cannot recall exactly what swayed me to 10AN, but i am really glad I did as they are quite large. 12AN fittings must be huge. The area around the sandwich plate is pretty tight, and the fittings in the sandwichplate are 1/2 inch. 10AN is a tiny bit bigger than 1/2 inch.
I went with a slightly more expensive Setrab vs Mocal oil cooler because i like black. The setrab is black the mocal is silver. Also, all the cool kids use setrab (nascar, grand am, F1) and for what its worth (very little) i read about mocal coolers splitting apart online.
As far as where i am mounting it, i am going to try and mount it in front of the radiator in front of the AC fan. If this doesnt work, i will just mount it in the center. Make sure to put some rubber in the mounting as the vibrations apparently kill oil coolers. I bought one of the factory mounts, but i really don't see how it will be usable. I really just bought it in case i needed it. Rather have the part and not use it than need it and not have it.
The sandwich plate that i bought has the integrated 180 degree thermostat. After buying it i read that its better to get a 200 degree one, which can be special ordered from Mocal (integrated into sandwich plate) or bought as a remote (plumbed in) thermostat. I'm just keeping what i got as this car is only driven on track. The oil should get hot enough.
Hope this helps.

I only sold 1 top, not 3.

I probably have more than 10k in this car, just buy used one and build your own.
Lastnight I braved the heat in the garage and improved my intake set up. When I bought the car the intake filter was just off a 90* coupler from the throttle body. Nice placement but obviously only inhaling hot air. I installed the intake piping to put the filter behind the driver side bumper opening for more horsepowers!

My friends rx7 that's next to mine in the garage with the same set up. This is how mine will look once the bumper is back on.

Today I mounted the setrab 25 row oil cooler. The oil cooler is behind the same bumper opening on the passenger side.
A little off level but won't be noticeable once the bumper is installed.

Bumper loosely placed in front. The opening will actually sit fairly close to the cooler, which is great because it'll keep the air directed where I want it.

Headlight down, showing 180* -10an fitting sitting on top of the oil cooler. It'll be a close fit but should work.

On the mounting points I used 1/8" thick rubber washers to help absorb vibration. On 2 out of the 3 mounting points I used a 1/4" rubber gasket that I made from a rubber floormat. Should keep the oil cooler happy.
For the 4th mounting point I'm going to use a stainless steel ziptie with thick vacuum hose at the mounting point to help with vibration. The 3 mounts I have on now are very solid. I'm just going to include the 4th because Setrab recommends it for over 19row coolers and to help with vibration.

Watch out for water and heavy rain with the air filter down there, you don;t want to water lock the engine.
I may add some rubber o rings to my Setrab cooler to cut down on the vibes,
FYI I saw 274 Max Oil temp at last weeks FATT, I pushed the car hard and had a lot of clean laps.

I don't typically drive the car in rain, that's one of the reasons I decided to move it there.
Good to know on your oil temps too. I'm sure you're getting a lot more out of the engine than I will be, which means my temps will probably be way lower.
