I understand where you are coming from Skip but I feel a Radar won't hurt as long as you use it with caution and responsibility. I agree you should slow down but purchasing a radar system won't hurt his case. IMO

Besides being illegal, it does nothing to help the poster's immediate plight.

How will it help him though? He's already been pulled over and has the ticket. Let it go.

While I'm here, I'll echo what everyone else has said... get a lawyer. Without one this thing is going to cost you a lot of money.

Your speedometer not working is no excuse. I would know. My MR2's speedo stopped working altogether months ago and I tried using that excuse when I got pulled over. Still got a ticket.

Cop: Do you know how fast you were going?
Me: No, my speedometer just stopped working the other day, I think something's wrong with the mechanical line.
Cop: Do you know what the speed limit is?
Me: 55, sir.
Cop: Well you were going 72. If you were going faster than traffic, then one could assume you were driving a bit too fast, right?
Me: Right.
Cop: And you wouldn't need your speedometer to tell you that you were driving faster than the flow of traffic, right?
Me: Right.
Cop: Right. So here's your ticket. Have a nice day. And get the speedometer fixed asap.

Yeah, I got busted for it. And I'm cool with it. I still love cops.

Well, maybe ... just maybe using a car with caution and responsability is cheaper that getting a radar, and it's 100% the best way of not getting in trouble to begin with.

Get a lawyer. If you were caugth in Fairfax County, even a perfect record will get you a suspension if you have a VA licence.

Ohh, and BTW, I learned the hard way. 2 reckless in my record so far. Now I make a point on just driving slow.

I thought getting caught with radar in VA was just a $50 ticket and confiscation of your radar detector?

Now my question to you is this. Did he write you for SPEEDING or Reckless driving? The reason I ask this is because one is a prepayable offense and the other is a mandatory court appearance. It all depends on what code section he wrote you under.

Now if he wrote you for speeding, I'd prepay that and not show up in court because the charges can be amended in court to a reckless should you want to contest it. You're better off prepaying it and forgetting about it.

Now if you he wrote you for reckless, then you'll need an attorney. It is a class 1 misdemeanor and a jailable offense, not to mention the lovely civil penalties that just went into affect. If you need an attorney, pm me and I'll send to a friend of mine that I helped when I was with the police dept.
I repeat. Read what I posted. See which one he charged you with and go from there.
