Calling COMPUTER PEOPLE!
Thanks, Dan. I'm guessing since 3D rendering isn't really exploited in video editing that consumption would be less. Equally guessing, spending another $40 for a more powerful power supply is nothing in the grand scheme.
I hate this rabbit hole.

Welcome to the black hole. If the video editing is using hardware acceleration (JPEG/MPEG), then it won't be idling... expect some current draw. You never want to run short on power... even a single glitch from an errant Adobe Flash into (for example) taxing your video card means you don't have enough power for your memory (or failed hard drive writes if you're right in the middle of a virtual drive swap, for another example). This leads to memory errors, which leads to failed OS-based memory, which leads to blue screens of death.

The system requirements in the first post of this page are my minimum requirements. As such, I've foregone the idea of getting an i5 processor in favor of the i7. That alone adds almost $200. Thank goodness I'm not in need of a high-end video card nor a monitor.

2.66 Ghz i7

Gotca, those systems can be modified and different processors can be used, I think the Studio XPS 9000 has the i7 proc's

Gotca, just knock off the monitor and save like ~200
Honestly if you haven't played with the Dell configuration you may want to. You can get some systems for absolute steals linked from like slickdeals.net or Dell directly.

I've spent more time using ALL the configurers I can find.
I check SD religiously.* broke down and even looked at Macs: http://www.apple.com/getamac/whichmac/
Cannot afford... at all.
for all of the time you've spent trying to find the perfect setup at the right price, you could have been enjoying a pre-built system for the last month or so. Your time has to be worth more than this, especially if you'd notice no difference if the two systems were side by side. As you said, you're not looking for state of the art, you want to edit video... as Nike said, just do it.

Yes, but doing the search time, I've learned a ton that I didn't know before. I'm glad I've done it. In doing so, I've also come to grips with knowing that $750 was/is an unreasonably low ceiling for what I'd like to have.

The only thing good about Dell's site is that you know the junk will work together. Other than that, they are expensive.

You can do it for $750 but some components will be cheapy if you want the i7 and a good amount of ram and decent graphics card which will require a good power supply.
You may want to look at motherboard/cpu combos on Newegg to see if any i7's pop up on there then look at the ram specs and buy whatever memory they have on special.
That just leaves you with a power supply (you could look at the "What others are buying" section) ,graphics card, and case.

Oh jeez, dude. The longer you put it off, the less likely you are to find something you like. Since what is available changes all the time, there's no getting around the fact that, whatever you get, something better will be available shortly after purchase.
That's been the case since 1987.
Wish you luck!
