Default clutch is taking a crap

yea i am def. not easy on my car at all. Brain knows what i am talking about lol but now i am having clutch problems. When i nail it and get into vtec u can feel the delay wile the clutch grabs. It is really bad when i bang the gears. So i am gonna prob. do the setup from hardtop guy because i plan on modding the car. So what i really want to know is how hard is it to put a clutch in? Or how much would comeone charge me to do it?

My competition clutch stage 1 is gonna be here tomorrow. For a complete kit $450 isnt too bad. And a buddy of mine owns a shop and is going to do me a personal favor by installing it for $150.

I helped with a friend's install on a new clutch and flywheel on his Evo IX and after that experience, I'm likely to pay a shop whatever it costs to replace my clutch if and when I do. Of course things are going to go slower your first time around, and the level of difficulty varies from car to car, but we had a lift and air tools and it STILL took a couple of days to finish based on stupid little things that are much harder than they'd seem.

That's NOT a fun install. I don't imagine it's any more fun on an S2K.

If you are not mechanically inclined, don't attempt it. Then after you've had the new clutch/flywheel installed, perhaps you'll be a bit more "nice" to it.

Not sure when Jeff/Joe are coming down to see me, but maybe they can do the install for you at my house. Nothing in that statement is written in stone though. I will check if you like.

Damn, I remember doing a clutch job on my MGB about 14yrs ago. It was a major pain in the ass because the easiest way was to pull the engine and trans together, as the trans and bell housing were one unit.

Radiator hoses, carbs, intake & exhaust manifolds, alternator, engine mounts, trans crossmember, drive shaft, speedo cable all had to come out to be able to pull both out.

Pulling the engine only created a problem because when you went to put it back in, the angle of the engine was too steep for the input shaft on the trans to line up to go through the clutch assembly and into the pilot hole of the crankshaft.

I hope the clutch on the S will be a lot easier to change than an MGB. I had mine replaced under warranty with the clutch TSB, but that was at 30,000 mi and only a few autox events. Now I have 91,000 mi and several autox seasons and track days on it. I have a feeling I'm going to have to do a clutch change myself before too much longer.

Black 01, how close are you to the Baltimore area? Maybe I could help you in a limited capacity if you choose to make it a DIY project.

Wow, jackstands and 4hrs? That's awesome. I don't know if the Evo's clutch install is more difficult than the S2K's or not, but there was no way we were getting that done in 4hrs.

I'd eventually like to upgrade the flywheel in my car though, because I like the way a lightened flywheel feels, and while I'm there, might as well upgrade the clutch. Just not sure how easy or hard it'll be on an S2K.
