If you don't know how fast you were going, then you deserve a ticket for not paying attention.

Ask 4theheckof_it about attorneys- he has a guy that is good, but not cheap. No, you cannot move the date forward. If you are from out-of-state, I believe the hired attorney can represent you without you being there. Also, they may be able to ask for a postponement.... dunno.

And I can't believe I'm answering this one: "What do I do if I'm found guilty?" You do as the judge says. Each case is different. What will most likely happen is that your lawyer will make a deal with the officer/DA/judge/whatever to have it reduced to a speeding ticket- not reckless driving. You will then pay the fine, court costs, lawyer fees, and probably have to take an online or classroom driving course.

WTF are you calling the cop a pig? You got busted speeding end of story. Get a lawyer and hope for the best in court.

The very next thing you have to do is find an attorney. Mine represented me without me having to be there (google map "20723 to Hanover, VA") - if you do have a clean driving record, that'll help. Mine wasn't spotless, but it was relatively clean.

First, check the attitude. Hire a lawyer. Do as he says.

VA's traffic system is TOOOOUGH brother.....you will definitely need to hire a lawyer, as these guys said you won't have to be present as long as he is there.

use a lawyer local to the county you were busted in. good luck i doubt you beign out of state will help much, but at least your not from in state

Ah.. gotta love these threads. Let's tackle your request to have the court date changed one day later. Sorry, but VA police officers each have a set date every month for court. Even if you get it postponed, you'll get bumped to the officer's next available court date. It's not like the officer doesn't know his court dates. They are given a year in advance so they always attend.

Now for my sarcasm since you called the police officer a pig. Welcome to VA! Hope your stay is lovely one. Remember, Virginia is for lovers!

Call around for local attorneys or see if someone on here has someone they can refer you to. I don't live in Northern VA, so I don't know anyone you can call up there. As far as moving your court date, you'll have to request a continuance or have your lawyer do it if you hire one. Usually the first time a case is on the docket, your request to continue will be granted if it's for a decently good reason. If you're convicted, you have to do whatever the judge orders. If you don't like what (s)he orders, you can appeal to the circuit court as I said above. You'll have 10 days from your conviction date to appeal.
And if your attorney starts down a path of saying that pitting your word against the radar and the cop's word will help you, then you've got a bad attorney. If he thinks he's going to get the radar evidence thrown out, but doesn't say exactly how, that's a bad attorney. If he says he handles lots of cases like this and can most likely plead it down before court, that's usually a good sign.

Reckless driving in the good old comonwealth is no joke. You say u have a clean record, so im willing to put money on it that you will either get charged for it, pay ur fines and walk out the courtroom or a chance of getting it reduced upon completing a drivers improvement clinic (considering you havnt within 4 years). It all depends on the judge and the courts have been crackn down on speeding pretty hard over the past couple years. I def recommend a laywer as they can negotiate with the prosecutor and cop to put in a good word for you, although in reckless driving convictions, its not the prosecutor who has say in it, as it all rests upon the judge and what he feels the neccessary actions should be against you. I have recieved 2 in the past year and a half, my latest being a 95/55. I got a laywer but the judge wasnt having it and slapped me with 90 days restricted liscense and $600 in fines not to mention what my laywer ended up costing me. Ive been in the hotseat enough for these damn things and I honestly think you have a good chance of getting it reduced upon completion of a driver improvement clinic upon submittal of ur clean driving record to the court. And yes, the laywer can represent you in the state of va w/o you being present. Good luck and slow down. I know I have

got a lawyer today... its going to be an expensive lesson for me. definitely will think twice again when i m in VA next time.
i do respect the cop for doing his job..but sometimes they just go out of their way to get you. i m not trying to say that it was not my fault...it was. i was lost and didnt know if it was the right directions to the airport. i wanted to catch the early flight so i can get business seat for my wife. shes 1 month pregnant. on top of that its a direct flight and we dont have to wait at the airport for hours. the airport here is very inconvenient...you have to take the shuttle bus to the terminal. i ve been to a lot of places but nothing is like this. again, thank you everyone for the info. wish me luck... good bye VA.
