People just need to understand that they need to take me with a grain of salt....sheesh. Some people take this stuff so seriously. But in the meantime.. I shall laugh at every chance I get.
They were looking to create the level in VA at 95 dbs. But I don't think it made it to the floor. Other than that, a cop can pretty much give you a ticket for modifing your exhaust. If the sound (decibel) of the exhaust is louder than stock than it is illegal.
Now here is everyone argument. What about muscle cars and harleys. Well they are technical also illegal, because most of them have modified exhausts. But guess what, tough sh!t. They been around longer and people look at them being loud. Also you got to image that this law probably came around when these muscle cars were being modified. Old people could stand the way they sounded then, so they complained. Hence the law. Which brings us to now, where the young people then (which are some are now cops) don't even really think about those types of cars or motorcycles.
Now they have this little imports running around with loud ass exhausts. Some sounding like fart cans, while others pierce the ear. But the more that people have these exhausts the more people will get use to them. So I'm sure it will die down in a couple of years. But the cycle will repeat itself. When we get older and we've got all these kids running around in whatever maybe, we'll complain. And the cars we have now will be classics.
Anyways, that's my .02 cents. If people are that worried about getting a loud exhaust and are worried about getting a ticket. Either don't buy one or as stated before, buy a Comptech or Fujistubo. Both are great exhaust and are very low key. And if you buy a loud exhaust suck it up and take the ticket, you knew about it before you bought the exhaust.
Another way to go around this, is to have your car registered in another state. Cops can't give you a ticket for your exhaust just because you are in a state that says modified exhausts are illegal. Whose to say that the state that the car is registered in says that its legal. State troopers and city/county cops can only enforce the laws of that state and of course federal law.
I'm pretty much sure of this. Peter, do you concur?
But like I said before that's my .02 cents and sorry that this post is super long.

Hi Kevin and all :
This topic has been addressed in the NY metro forum a few times ... bottom line is that the law IN NY is clear, and I have quoted it exactly in the past.
Specifically -- in NY the only legal exhaust is one that puts out the same noise level as when the car was manufactured . Anything louder leaves the car fair came in the shooting gallery for the five-0 .
That about covers it.
See you all soon !!
