Moving to DC
The entire DC Metro area is rather expensive, but there are good finds if you take the time to look for them.
If you can't find a place near a Metro station, "slugging" is an option -- a mode of transportation I had never heard of before moving here.

Prepare for 2X the cost of rent or mortgage as you had in NC. I'm planning to move to NC soon to escape living in a shack because I can't afford a mortgage! townhouses and apartments near DC are upwards of $400K still...and that's with decreasing property values. I hope you are making 2X what you did in NC.
