Here is a thread all about preload on JIC dampers (which are similar in design)

It gets a little long winded but there is good info here. This will help you understand your suspension better and make your car handle better also.

wow that does help a lot...sounds like nothing is busted I just need to adjust them.

"yes, the height is raised by turning the threaded body up and down in the base. by raising the height through this method actually puts too much pre-load on the springs, then you have to back a little out. "

The body of mine didnt seem to be able to be threaded up and down. Maybe I didn't try hard enough? Sounds like I'll be asking Peter for more help and shop time so hopefully he is reading this.

ok it looks like the bump rubber is pretty high up....its near impossible to see though without jacking up and taking the tire off. If I do that though wont it decompress and not be accurate as to how much space is available for travel? Sorry if my terms aren't accurate. I'm praying nothing is "blown" or broken.

If you look at Dylan's signature....my rear is at least that low and on stock rims like him if that helps at all. My front looks a lil higher then his but not much.
I think you can see it with a flashlight and some crawling on the ground (maybe not in work clothes though)

The way to check it is put the car on 4 jack stands remove the wheels then jack up one a-arm so it just barely lifts the car off the jack stand, that should be about normal, then check the bump rubber spacing.

Now this may not be the cause of the noises you are experiencing but it's a good thing to check.

Great thread

Didn't finish reading it but I know so much more already, lol...

But that also makes realize the fact that I'm going to have to do a lot of research before I put on any coilovers

Yea I think my rear is lower...front is about the same. The sound seems to come from both sides but only from the rear. It seems to be louder on the driver side. I'm not sure if thats because Thats the closest one to me or not.

That looks a little low in the rear, I like the have a little more rake in the car (higher in the rear) this makes the car turn better.

If your car in bottoming on the bump rubbers you make not notice it at street speeds, mine would act up when cornering hard (say in a on-ramp)

The car would start to bounce.

it wouldnt be all the time, but the car sure as heck bounced. Not on a perfectly flat road, but say I hit a bump on just one side of the car.....it felt like it was bouncing side to side if that made any sense. like the right side would go up then left then right and so on....

That sounds like you are riding on or near the bump rubbers, basically when you hit the bump rubber your spring rate goes 100x stronger, its like driving with no suspension.
