Also, I'm curious, exactly how low on oil did you get? I'm surprised the oil light never came on. It seems like you'd likely be in a low oil pressure situation to do that much damage.
Thanks for the heads up about the AP1 versus AP2. I am still exploring all my options and in fact just got a call from my dealership friend who, thanks to having worked on 5 of my familys cars, is looking into getting my a special deal on an AP1 so I'm still waiting to hear back on that.

As for the oil. Basically the knocking started really lightly, I almost didn't hear it as I had my window rolled down going 70. At first I thought a rock or something might have just gotten stuck somewhere under the car and was bouncing around since it was so slight and no difference in the feel of acceleration. As it grew louder I realized I needed to get to a service station ASAP but as soon as I turned off the exit to get there it crapped out and wouldn't start again. It wasn't exactly a boom, that was more metaphorical lol.

When I pulled the dipstick it was really low but not empty, but being new to this car I didn't realize how quickly it burns through oil.....lesson learned

So there was still enough oil to reach the bottom of the dipstick?

I'm not proud to admit, but when I was new to the S2k, I ran it pretty low on oil once. It was well below the L mark -- almost off the dipstick. Didn't do any damage at all. Almost 20k miles later (90k total), and the car still runs like a champ. Our engines hold a LOT of oil for their size. You can get surprisingly low without hurting them.

I wonder if something else went wrong, and you just happened to be low on oil at the same time...

allow me to correct you. The s2000 does not burn through oil. You're particular car went through oil or you were not aware of a preexisting condition. My car never burned oil, not one drop and I drove my car hard, when I did drive it.

Many AP1's do. It's a well known thing.

Under hard driving up to 1qt/1000mi is considered normal. I go through about half of that amount.

I would never consider 1qt/1000mi normal.

Anthony, I think you are possibly the exception out of everyone I know with an older AP1. They tend to consume.

I think it also could have to do with the oil that you use. Most people that report high consumption use Mobil 1. I've recently switched to Pennzoil, but don't have long term data to tell any difference since I stopped driving the car.

Maybe "acceptable" is a better word? 1qt/1000 is the limit of where I'd start to get worried. I got this advice from CKit I believe? It was a long time ago.

FWIW, I burned that about that much when I was driving the car really hard, and autoxing a lot last year. No problems >10k miles later.
