other things I do (recently got off of a 80 in a 55 in MD)- strictly keep hands on the steering wheel when he approaches
- in the S, since the registration is prolly in secret compartment, turn on the interior light and tell the officer where it is. I keep my left hand open and out the window.
- in the same theme, though it was cold I lowered my top so he could clearly see me and my hands at all times.
- pull over alllllll the way into the grass, so there is as much room as possible for his safety. my left wheel was almost touching where the grass started.
I think implicitly giving him a feeling of safety at all times vastly improves your chances of getting off with a warning.
Also, I let him know my intentions before each move--going for wallet, getting registration behind seat, etc.--so that I do not surprise him. A surprised offficer is a more apt to ticket officer. Officers never know what you are going to do or who you are, so this nicety also helps.
I keep my registration behind the passenger seat, so my passenger has to actually leave the car to get it out. The officer is made aware of this before it happens.
It may sound like I am kissing his arse, and I am. You are in the officers *sole* discretion whether you get ticketed or not. Now is not the time to be the big man. Now is the time to swallow your pride, do whatever you can top make the situation better for the officer.
You can show machismo later when you brag how you worked your way out of the ticket.

if you do plan on making a court appearance in person, i'd suggest getting the court date changed. if not, i'd echo getting a lawyer.

Only advise I can give you is DON"T SPEED on I-81 in VA. The cops out there are in BFE and have not a thing better to do than to set up radar on I-81. Believe me, I went to Virginia Tech and travel I-81 every month or so and finally just set my cruise on 70 for the whole trip! 3-4 speed traps in 100 miles is normal.
The same goes for RT 17 below Fredericksburg. Especially Middlesex County. Set the cruise control on 61 MPH and try to stay awake while you enjoy the scenary.
It is all about "revenue enhancement". The new transportation bill that is passing in the Virginia legislator is imposing new higher fines for aggressive drivers, to fund highway expansion in Northern Virginia.
