Does anyone know for sure if VA police use laser? I have a friend who is an officer and he says he only has radar. I have also heard in the past, from sources that might not be reliable, that VA police don't have/use laser.

I use an Escort Passport 8500 with VG2. Seems to work well. Escort has a new battery powered detector that has sensitivity similar to the 8500, but you can just clip it to the visor rather than the windshield with no visible power cords to give it away. Do a search for Cincinnatti Microwave for all their products. I've only detected laser twice in VA, but I don't think it was police related either time. Both times it was while travelling on Interstate 64 near Langely AFB. The state troupers always seem to use Ka band radar guns, and the locals use K band always on radar. Have not seen any police using X band radar. VA advertises using aircraft to detect speeders, but I don't know what they use for detection. Radar detector ticket costs $40 in VA Beach. Speeding tickets are much more expensive. If you own an S2K, you are already aware of how the car tends to creep above the speed limit sometimes. A radar detector may help remind you to check your speed more often. Good luck and drive safely.

I got busted recently only because mine was not hardwired(hidden). I have used a detector since 1998 and that was my first ticket while it was in use. Don't be cheap, get something reliable. I use BEL, the ticket was only 40.00 but court was 60.00. One of Chesterfield County's finest with nothing to do at 5:00am in the morning was mad because I passed him on a twisty road(speed limit 40 m.p.h.)doing 70. He could not catch me until 5 miles later. When he stopped me all I could say was "Officer I never saw you." Since he wasn't using his radar he decided to just give me a reckless driving ticket=$200.00 fine. I love my S.

If you do get the detector, get the remote display (such as the one that is available with the V1). For stealth purposes, it's important to have your detector and indicator display separate. For optimal performance, the detector itself needs a clear and high line-of-sight forward and backward, but its lights are VERY visible to the cops. This conflicts with the goal of being stealth, so you really need a remote or hidden display that you can mount somewhere discretely on the dash.

Rick made something that hid the V1 in the stealth glovebox

A simple search goes a long way. Here are links to two remote mount locations for the V1...

And yes, VA State Troopers use laser, though I doubt many of the county cops do. Additionally, the Park Police (who police the GW Parkway) certainly use laser. I should know.

FairFax County & Loudoun both use Laser. Not all officers are equiped or certified on Laser so you don't see them using it as much. I do know that the Loudoun Traffic Units do use Laser.
