Thumbs up Visiting Baltimore, MD

Hello East Bay Members!

I'll be coming to the East Coast for the very first time for work. I've lived in California all my life. I'll be visiting the last week of august for about 5-6 days (not confirmed yet). I was hoping you locals can suggest places to see and things to do on my visit. I enjoy sight seeing, visiting monuments, and shopping (as my fiancee will also be joining me).

Lastly, are there any ferries, buses, trains, light rail or public transportation that can get me to New York City. And what would be the cheapest mode of transportation to NYC. I like to spend one or two days there. I know that's not much time but that's all I got and trying to make the best of my visit. I'm close to 30 yrs old so that gives you a little knowledge of what a 30 year old might want to do.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated and hey if you are free to show me and my fiancee around that would be cool too. As of right now, all I know is that I'll be staying somewhere near the Baltimore harbour??? I'll post up more info once I find out.

Thanks.

Fred

Where to start....

I would see an oriole game for sure (for the stadium alone). Fells Point, Canton and Federal Hill are nice places to be and all very very close to the harbor. Id be more than willing to come give you guys a looksee around. Let me know when and where youll be.

To get to NYC bus would probably be the way to go, but youd have to get your tickets now, the travel plaza is not far from the harbor and goes to NYC from there, drops you off in times square and from there you can hit the subway...

Yeah, nicest way to get to NYC is taking the Acela (fast Amtrak), but it'll run you close to $300 per person. You can get some china town bus for like $20 a person and sometimes it even has wireless internet on it. Nothing fancy, but I have friends that have taken it and said it's great, especially for the price. It's only a 3 hour drive from Baltimore.

That other thread that nightcrawler linked has a lot of info that should help you out.

yea, I already read this thread before posting. The thread you referred to had to do with what to eat rather than what to do. Thanks though.

Well I just found out that I will be staying at the Sheraton on Fayette St in Baltimore.

A few questions:

What bus goes to NYC? (I know someone mentioned about buying tickets from Chinatown). I prefer not to do that.

What bus, train, or lightrail will take me to Washington's Whitehouse. I would love to see it in person.

Thanks again for your inputs.

I will be going to an Oriole's game I think on Monday when I arrive. My company booked it for us already. Can't wait.

And just found out my Fiancee won't make it after all.

You also mentioned to take the bus to NYC. What bus are you talking about? City bus, greyhound, etc...?? Also checked out mtamaryland.com and didn't find much info on how to get to NYC or Whitehouse.

Please be patient as I will be asking many questions. It's my first time going and will be all by myself.

I would consider a stop in Annapolis, it's got a lot of small shops and places to eat and drink. You can walk around the whole city on foot. I like the rams head tavern or Mcgarves. It's about 30 min from Baltimore.

I would go to the Baltimore Travel Plaza for greyhound tickets north. Also google Hunt Valley Motorcoach, they specialize in daytrips but they leave from about 15 mins north of the city. I believe they go to DC as well.

A few things I would personally want to see if I wasnt a resident

- Babe Ruth Birthplace & Muesem (Its literally walking distance from Camden yards, and marked by orange footprints from the warehouse area of the stadium)

- Fort Mchenry (You can catch a water taxi from the inner harbor to the site, this is where Francis Scott Key penned the star spangled banner)

- B&O Railroad Muesem

- U.S.S. Constellation (Built in 1854, this is the last all-sail warship built by the U.S. Navy and the only Civil War-era naval vessel still afloat.)
