I graduate in a month and a half. I plan on puttin in applications in places during Christmas break.

I have a very basic tool kit, rachets, sockets, wrenches, and that's about it. I am planning on buying 2 torque wrenches and an impact and air rachet, I don't even know what else I'll need..
My advice would be to get a steady pay check and avoid opening your own business until later. While it's true you have the least to lose early in life this economy makes it really hard going. Get a range of valuable skills and find work at something you love.

Yea thats true. I still live with my parents so that is cutting cost. I pay rent, however it is still cheap.

For the guys in the states, is it only $500 a month now?! Thats it?! In Toronto its like $1000 average, and that is being generous, for rent.
I wish. That's if you're sharing a house with like 2-4 guys (size of house depending).

I pay 662.50/mth in rent for a 2 bed, 1 bath with my brother (So 1325, if my arithmetic skills are up to par). At least here in Northern California, for a one bedroom apt you're looking at ~1000 in an 'indifferent' neighborhood, and about 1200-1500 in a 'good' one. If a place is under a grand here, I basically already assume something sketch is going on in the proximity.
If I wanted to be downtown Toronto, and in an actual good place, the price is gonna be $1500 atleast as well, but I still think Cali is overpriced by the sounds of it . Toronto is crazy cause it has such a vast range of prices.

You can get a 1bedroom apt in the beaches for $800/month. Approx 700sq/feet. Parking sucks.

I think the biggest problem with Toronto is the job stagnation and run away inflation. Air quality has improved over the years though. Really happy to see that.

Barrett, I will take you some pics of things you will end up needing if you plan to stick with it. If you are going to a dealership they will only provide some shop tools that are for specific jobs. (vise, press, special tools for the car make, and service machines for transmission and stuff)

Even though you are worried about your debt, I can not stress how much easier your life is when you buy a quality tool. However, be careful because you can get into serious debt on the Snap-On truck. You will find their truck prices very comparable to online offerings from snap on. Air ratchet is a hit you don't have to take. PM me if you are looking at places in the North AL area. I have made some friends in my four year stint as a dealership rat.

I just graduated today. I am finally through, finished with 3 letters of recommendation, 2 certifications, and a happy me. I am going tomorrow to talk to the manager at the Honda dealership nearby. Sounds promising. I don't have a ton of tools but I have the necessities. Sockets, ratchets, wrenches, electrical tools. I know I'll need a few thing such as a good torque wrench and an impact but I don't really know what else.

One of my friends started working for Honda and immediately started moonlighting tech on craigslist and now a year later has his own shop with a partner.
