with low balance you can try drip accounts or maybe try something like sharebuilder.

there's various similar ones that don't have a starting balance requirement, and you make subscription or transaction payments. The point of these is really not the initial payment but the continued investment monthly, weekly, etc.
I personally would advise against day trading, but whatever works for you.
