anyone know if you can get an amp/speaker combo that doesn't use wires?

zero dont know off hand, certainly not big, purists tend to use wires, so quality may not be too good. Ask around on www.avforums.co.uk

Even if you use radio linked speakers, you'll still need to plug them into the mains.

I was hoping for a battery solution maybe....things is we have solid wood floors so it's not a case of being able to hide the wires under carpet

The Philips TV I have has wireless rear speakers - well I say wireless, you still have to plug them into the mains, but there are no wires between the TV and rear speakers which makes things much neater.

Overall 5.1 is pretty good though the sub woofer (built into the cabinet) rattles a little and the rear speakers are a little noisy in a digital sort of way.

Dunno if anyone does a separate amp with this capbility though....

yep, you can get wireless speakers as Jonem mentions, quality is okay, but all you'd expect from the size of speaker....

can you lift the floorboards to put cable down?

You can get some very discret trunking for this purpose - have even seen some that replaces the skirting board with an identical board which has a hollow section for running cables.

How about this mini skirting to hide the wires?

http://www.standsunique.com/accessories.html

Not ideal, but if run behind furniture may not notice too much?
