Default Air filter

Just what the headline says.

I have to replace my air filter. Is the basic K & N filter worth the extra price? If not, any suggestions for a good replacement?

Thanks for your input in advance.

IMO, no it's not worth it. If you have the OEM box, I prefer the OEM filter. The amount of flow gained through the K&N is negligible at best and I doubt it even makes a difference.

Pros: Cost more so it must be better (kidding). Comes with a K&N sticker. Some folks can put it in their sig line as a mod. Box says adds HP (yeah right).

Cons:
It doesn't make any better sound. It doesn't look any better because it's covered. You have to waste time cleaning it and then oiling it and letting it dry.

I had the opportunity to have the car on the dyno when i changed to a KN filter. I did see an average of 5hp over 3 runs. I have a OEM air box.

Averaged 1.5 hp inc for changing to Royal Purple oil too

Gain probably came from a new, clean filter more than anything else. If you plan on keeping the car for a while, K&N-like filter is worth it since it is reusable whereas the OEM is not.

K and N is better in the long run as it is cleanable the oem has to be replaced. other then that not much of a difference. imo.

I would deff use some air intake cleaner after driving around with the K&N fliter cause it lets more stuff into the engine esp. if you have a snorkel like i do. i clean my engine every spring because you inhale alot of winter driving crap into the engine.

I had one. It was no different than OEM, but at least I could clean it. You'll have to do the math over your ownership to see if it's worth it. You won't notice a difference really.

I gotta wonder if it's really cheaper when you consider the cost of having to buy the cleaning kit too. You can buy a few OEM filters for what it cost you to set up with K&N. I guess if you plan on having the car for 20 years it will definitely save a few dollars. Then again, time is money too.
