Not until I find cracked ones I wont. I inspect them yearly and have found no trouble yet with 80k of hard miles

Yes I'm talking about valve retainers. I've never over-rev. However, if you're the 2nd or 3rd owner, there's no telling what happened beforehand. Unless you pull them out and visually inspect them, there's no way of telling if there's potential cracks. In which at that point you might as well just change them.

Inspecting the retainers only takes about an hour or less, why should you spend the $$ on AP2 retainers if you don't need to?

Assurance I suppose .

I'm noticing more of us ap1 guys are climbing up in the higher mileage club, inevitably at some point our retainers are eventually going to fail. Some of us would opt to proactively tackle this issue rather than wait for it to arise. I'll prob hold off as I'm only at 51k. However, it's good to hear that at 80k you haven't noticed any cracks.

The retainers don't just break down and crack at a higher mileage from what I've seen. They need to be abused to fail. You can change em out for peace of mind, but I'll spend my $$ on tires and gas in the mean time

I'm with daktruckie99 on this one. Absent an egregious misshift, I expect the AP1 retainers to last until the car goes to the boneyard, or the engine is overhauled. I'll check them from time to time, and only spend the time/money if necessary.

But if replacing them gives you pleasure, more power to you.

AP1 here, never change the retainers. Then again, I've never looked at them since I've never had the valve cover off. I suppose if I do a valve adjustment and there's a visible issue I'll swap'em out.
