Default Emissions in MA

Me and the wife are planning to move to MA from CT sometime next year.(only 20mins away). Anyways, I hear different stories about MA emissions/inspection. I want to know what exactly they will check. Just emissions? Just inspection? Or both? Am I going through the sniffer or obd2? My car is a 2002 so by next year it will be 15 years old. Thanks guys!

No sniffer, they will not use the odb2 plug if your car is 15 years old. Otherwise they will check for readyness codes. They will check for saftey as well.

They will (but not always) fail your car if its too low, or exhaust is too loud.

Hope you can read it OK.

My car is basically stock and has never failed inspection.

So just a safety inspection for my 2002 then? I'm guessing they are not going to look under and check for a cat? I'm running a tp right now.

They will not look under. Some places lift your car slightly with a floorjack to look for play in your suspension. Be careful though, some places start asking questions when they start smelling heavy exhaust fumes. My friends RX-8 had a tp on it, and while he still passed, they started interrogating him a little bit.

Depends on the place, while most don't bother looking but if your exhaust reeks they might look and or question you.

I currently running a 3in tp and 3 in exhaust. Ill throw back the stock exhaust before inspection.

So for sure its just safety inspection correct?

No it'll just be safety inspection next year (in 2017). Right now you'll still need to pass readiness codes via obd2. I also have a 2002 and live in MA.

"The following vehicles must successfully complete an OBD emissions test: 2002 to current model year passenger vehicles (e.g. cars, trucks, SUVs)."
