Cats are smarter than people think. Our departed kitty always seem to know which room we were in as she'd jump up and bang on the window to get our attention.

If she was out at night, she'd bang on our bedroom window. Even though it's on a first floor, she still had quite a jump to make. She'd continue jumping and banging until one of us got up to let her in.

Another time she "hitched" a ride to the next town in my son's brother in law's car. I get a call at three AM from my soon to be daughter in law telling me she thinks my cat is at her house.

The brother didn't realize it, but the cat hopped into his car, scooted out before he saw her, then she banged on a window, pushed in the screen and settled in on my daughter in law's bed!

No kidding.... They are like your kids ( but better )
Someone once told me something very insightful about pets vs kids. Pets will never ask to borrow money or the car. While they do tend to break curfew too often, they're inexpensive to feed and want nothing more than to be your best friend in the world. Granted I don't have kids so I'm no expert, but pets rule!!

They all have there unique personalities. We have one cat who is 23 lbs (!) but there isn't a mouse alive that he can't catch - he looks just like Garfield When he was little he would steal my sock and run off with it.

We have 3 kids and had 4 cats - we now have plenty of experience with both species

They have responded to us being really upset and are now beginning to figure out something has changed. We had a chat with our neighbour last night who takes care of ageing greyhounds to get some advice on the way to approach this to help the remaining cats. Right now they are cuddling with us to make us feel better.

I feel your loss. It's one of those things that's in some ways an easy decison but in others so hard to do.
