Hey Bill,
Definitely is the hard drive. I personally would replace the hard drive. I have used/recommended/installed Dell's for 10 years now. I love them. Save the money and run to Best Buy or Circuit city and purchase a new drive. Western Digital is a good brand. If you have any data on the old drive that can most likely be recovered also. Just my $.02.

Paulie
Thanks Paulie. I have seen internet listings for ATA. Are they any good?

So well? I figured that was why everything worked so poorly together.

Bill, assuming th laptop is not super ancient, I would replace the HD and possibly upgrade the ram, then use it as an e-machine in the kitchen. Good for watching streaming video while cooking. Good for looking up car stuff while working in the garage, too.

I recommend Seagate over WD though. Had 3 WD int. HD all of them died on me within a year. It has a pretty bad reputation across user reviews.

It is a Pentium 3 and was probably a 99 or 2000 MY.

If its 7 or 8 years old, I would trash it...

Nice to see we all agree and have made things easy for Bill.

if its that old trash it.

i've been toying with getting a MacBook Pro myself but its more because its the computer of choice when it comes to photo editing due to the hardware it comes with. Bang for the buck you can't go wrong with a MAC but you have to ask yourself is it worth that much just to surf the web and email?

I love my MAC . And with a small program called Parallels for $80 you can run OSX and Windows ate the same time and share drag and drop between them . No need to daul boot .

My mac came with more useful software out of the box than any window PC I ever owned . I even use to build my own PC's

iPhoto - for all your photo album needs .
iDVD - and iMovie for all your movie making needs
iTunes - for all your music needs
iWeb - My Favorite for making web pages , Blogs , podcast , photos pages and is tied in with the other programs .
Photobooth is a cool ap to that uses my built in cam and turns it into a fun house cam .
Comic strip lets me be creative .

I have a Mac Book Pro , so not sure what come standard on the regular MacBooks . But this is the best Laptop I have owned and last 3 hrs on a charge . I have a HP AMD 64 laptop also and the battery is already junk and is lucky to last 15min .

Some might think My MacBook Pro is expensive , but if you add up all the software and hardware it comes with its really not . I have yet to by any software for my Mac other than Parallels to run windows .

Giles also has the same laptop and uses it to develop windows software for Autodesk LOL . That says something right there LOL

you are welcome to call me Bill if you have any questions I would suggest just going to a Mac Store and play with one for awhile .
