I'm looking at her current camera and it has a 35mm-80mm lens on it (don't know where her other lens' are). So this would work for a new one (both Cannon rebel, even though her current one is old)?

How old is her Canon... if it is in the rebel line they are all the same. The older metal body canon's are not. I would go with the XTi its only 100 more $$$ and 2 more Mp's

THe lens itself should work with the new digital. What it wont do is autofocus like newer lenses do. Seeing that she was used to doing that before it may be a means to get the camera cheaper... but be sure to tell her you have put aside X amount of dollars for her to pick out a lens she would like to add. THere are too many types to assume you know or can ask for help. It was her hobby, she will know better what she wants or what questions to ask to find a lens she wants to use.
