Default HELP!! Need install CD key Windows 98 Second edition

I am trying to keep my computer from crashing when I visit just a few web pages.....and I think it has something to do with a Java application that locks up my machine.

I can click around at some sites but then all of a sudden the computer just freezes when it gets to a page.

I just can't figure it out. I have been running win 98 on this machine for like a couple years with virtually no crashes. Now it's got all kinds of issues but only with explorer.

So 1 I need a CD key as I am installing win 98 on top of my current 98 installed there as I don't want to loose everything on my computer. And if that doesn't work then I guess I need to get a new HDD to do a fresh install on and try to bring my applications over to that new OS.

Thanks guys.

I think Bill Gates is sending over a few people to "talk" to you as you read this.

Well I am using an ancient computer...........300mhz.(all I needed it to do was internet which now really isn't doing it's job)

I am also just recently out of a job so this really isn't helping. Luckily there is a 2nd computer in the house that I can use.

I would like to run something newer but it would require $$$ which right now I REALLY can't spend.

I certainly won't be offering any keys. You can pick up Windows 98 dirt cheap in a used software store or at ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...&category=41884

However I would advise against NOT installing Win 98 on top of Win 98. Most likely it will not resolve any of your problems and may cause more. Best advice. Backup your data, blow away the HDD and start over.

For more tips I recommend visiting http://www.annoyances.org/

This thread is completely off topic. Good luck!

I found the CD key. Though I need to do exactly as JSmooth says..........except that I need to get all my data over to another HDD. I might actually try to get back into windows copy it over to my partitioned HDD and format the bad half. Then prey it works. I would much rather get a new HDD and go from there.

I also have a CD burner............might just burn all my stuff onto a CD. HMMMMM. I just hate to loose some of the programs I might have had.

The computer is nuked!!! I need a new one. Tower only.

I am talking to Jenner about maybe getting a Dell Tower.

All I really do is surf/play DVD's/ burn CD's/ check e-mail/ IM/ etc. No gaming really happens from my computer.(of course now I have broad band I don't game online )

Old computer has an older DVD and CD Burner so I am not sure if they can be salvaged.(2 separate drives)

Thoughts?
