no I believe he is saying you get 75 % back from the energyit takes to pump it up hill.
We have two facilities like that in western mass that take power generated during off hours and store it for peak period demand.

but with respect to the hydrogen discussion for automotive use, hydro storage doesn't help much.

I should have said more. Currently, the only commercially viable source of hydrogen is natural gas; building more and more wind/solar generation is going to require that an equal amount of natural gas-fired generation be available at a moment's notice to stabilize the grid, given the intermittent nature of wind/solar. If we can store excess wind/solar energy in hydro, perhaps we can eliminate the need for so much natural gas-fired generation, freeing the gas up for transportation uses.
