Post My winter heating expense saving plan

Ok, here is the deal. I did not lock in the rate for oil......bad move. The other day I have my tank fill up like (75% of the tank empty before the fillup) It was like $427.00 dollars, $2.59 per gallon.

Not good.

I figure it out, if I use the heat like how I use it before. (Contant 72 degree, 68 degree when I am not at home), it can easily cost me $500 a month.

How about I buy a stove for my bedroom and use my oil burner just to keep the pipes from freezing.

Of course I have to cough up $1,500 for the stove.

Worst case senario:

6 months of $500 heating bill= $3,000

Alternative:

Spend $1,500 to buy a stove and spend $500 dollars for the wood pallets(which is plenty) and I still have $1,000 left for oil delivery.

Am I missing anything?

dude -

DROP YOUR HEAT TO 54 WHEN YOUR NOT HOME and drop your heat to 68 when you're home

72 degress what are you, vintage or something put on a sweater!!

also you need to figure out the cost of wood & installation into your calcs -

IF you are going to heat with a wood stove - plan on 3 to 4 cords for the season

stove pipe is also $$$$$ - and then if you do not use a fireplace insert - you'll need to make sure you have the proper clearances for a wood stove

look for a fireplace insert.. and then figure out what that will cost you

mine is set like this (because i am now cheap)

monday - friday

wake up = heat is set at 67
leave for work 57
come home 67
11:00 = 60

weekend 67 but i turn it down manually if i leave the house

Thomas do you have programable thermostat?

use this

http://www.energyguide.com/ha/calclaunch.a...erid=65&sid=472

and enter 02056 to see how much money you'll save just by turning down your heat

Hmm....maybe I can drop it to 40's? As long as the pipes are not freezing, I don't care how cold it is inside my house when I am out.

from reading about this stuff, they say not to fluctuate more than 15 degrees either way because it will take more energy to get the house warm again...

also if you're serious - look at a pellet stove or a pellet insert because they are much better than a wood stove..

Thomas,

I agree with Steve. Don't lower the temps too much as it takes forever to warm the house. Even the furniture will "hold the cold."

Lower the temp during the day, and when you sleep. It's better sleeping in a cool room. Keep the temp comfortable when you are awake.

Wood stoves can be a good alternative, but in addition to the cost, keep in mind it's not the cleanest way to heat your home. Not sure that would work for you.

I agree with Steve. 1st off you are heating your home much to warm. Your furnace will be going non-stop at those temps.

I kept my thermostat at 66/60 last year and I am planning on 64/60 this year to try and save some more. I also have a wood stove I got for free so that will help me a bit.

Some suggestions for staying warm...

Buy Svetlana some cheap flowers once a week, this will help keep you warm at night.

Sweaters/sweatshirts

Flannel sheets

When you feel like its freezing inside, walk outside for 10 minutes them come back to your home which is truely quite comfortable now that you have a new perspective.

The problem with 'HAWT' woment is that they are so often complaining about the cold.

Least thats the case with my HAWT woman.

Thomas,

Here's another way to keep warm, for cheap money. Sveta will think you are HAWT.

Gotta love those feet pajamas. Maybe they have some with ducks on them!
