The fact that you are an accountant scares me sometimes.

First you will not be using $500/mo for 6 months. more like
$300, 350, 420,500,460,350, 300 Oct-April=$2680 est

These monthly figures are a estimate on your bill Oct-Apr. and a 62% fuel increase.

Total est fuel costs for previous year $1652

So you are going to spend about an extra $1000 this year than last on fuel. You could save 15-20% by getting a programmable thermostat. DO THIS FIRST!

Now for the Stove:
Stove $1500-2000
Install $300
Fuel $400

Total for stove $2200-2700

Not Worth it.

How well is your house insulated? If I was going to drop coin to save on energy costs, I'd start there. I like insulation better because it add value to the home more relaibility and has both winter AND summer benefits.

OK.....I'm done with hack math.

Bob once told me I can buy pieces of plastic covers(soft) and put them behind the plastic covers of electric outlets and switches throughout the house. I think it will be a good start.

Otherwise, my house has replacement windows everywhere....practically air tight.

Oh, how about between the floorboard?baseboard and the hardwood floor? The floor is so cold, and I suspect this little gap is leaking cold air in.

But remember you pay for the stove and install only once, so the savings in subsequent years will be greater.

In year 2, if fuel prices stayed the same and we assume better heat management from Thomas (15%) savings, and a stove cuts his normal heating costs in half (doubtful):

With Stove:
$1139 Oil
$400 Pellets/wood

Total $1539

No Stove:
Oil Only $2278

Savings 739 year.

In this unlikely scenerio, it would take 3 years to payoff the stove and break even.
Knowing Thomas (who doesn't stay in a job for more than a few months) he'll sell the house before he breaks even.

If heating costs go lower (as evidenced by recend drops in fuel costs) say to like 2.00 a gallon...........

877 oil, 400 wood/pellets
$1277

$1754 oil only, heating season

$477 year savings.......nearly 5 years to recoup in this scenerio but investing the Stove cost and intallation into a stock fund or his 401k may keep his breakeven from ever happening.

Thomas is brittle and delicate like a flower. Not big and burly .

I think we retain body heat better than Thomas .

Speaking of big and burly ,I need to start exercising . I have put on a few pound sense I started working for myself

All I can say is get some thick blankets and cuddle . I sure Steve can come by and keep you warm .
