Default Question for iPhone gurus

OK, so I love my iPod touch. I wish it had the GPS and microphone capabilites of the iphone though. A data connection besides the wifi would be great too.

Here is what I am considering.... (looking for feedback from iGurus to see if it is feasable and/or a good idea)

First, I love my Nextel direct connect and CANNOT give it up right now.

second, like most of us, I pay $50+ for cable internet at home.

So, what I want to do is get an iPhone, jailbreak it and use it as a modem at home for my laptop so I can cancel my cable internet and justify/mitigate the cost of the iphone plan.

Obviously I would return my iPod touch which would pay for the iphone purchase.

I checked the AT&T website and they say I am in a "best service" 3g area on their map.

So, will everything work as planned or am I crazy or not understanding something? How well does the data tethering work? What are the downside to jailbreaking beside voided warranty?

Thanks guys!

Jeff,

I have almost no idea of what you are trying to do.

Actually, I almost understood what you are looking to do, and curious to know if it works out......

That Itouch is a neat little gadget......I'm tempted.........Rick is not.

Truth be told I stay pretty well connected being at a computer all day, and having one at home. I don't need to be online with my cell phone too......I rarely use the cell phone....we could be really Vintage and have not one, but two Trac phones. Ricks Trac phone has been a good economical purchase.

BTW, I never heard of "jailbreak" and can't understand why anyone wants the Nextel direct connect. Damn those calls are annoying to those of us around you.

Bah, you are missing out on all the important stuff! That's like saying you just use a Ferarri to go to the store.... Sure, it will get you to the store, but it can do so much more.
