Exactly!!!
I can't tell you how many times I packed a map on the Nighthawk and went out for a ride, only to pull over on the side of the road after hours of riding knowing I was completly lost, but that was the fun. I would ride for hours just going heare and then there, picking that road over the other one, not having any care in the world as to where I was going, as loing as the road I was on was the best one I could find.
For me a big part of the fun was getting lost, figuring out where I was with the help of a good map, plotting out a route home, and then getting back into the saddle.

for work reasons I bought a GPS.
adventure is great but not at 3:00 AM when you trying to find your frickin hotel in some city you've never been to before.
BUT, you just triggered a great thought.
now i can go get lost until it time to go home. plug that bad boy in and click home.
of course my wife is a natural navigator. she LOVES maps.
one vacation we went up to Maine northeast of Augusta, then across to Conway then up across God's country in the northeast kingdom, then down along Champlain, then out to lake placid and then back home. all in one week.
I don't think we ever hit a main road except for the mohawk on the way back

Ok, not that would indeed be fun!
BTW- Don't use too much logic on this train of thought, I was just looking to give Ellen a hard time.

i was busting Ellen tooo
but I literally have done the 3:00 am gig. it sucks.
and when your territory is the US, you just can't carry maps for everywhere.
adn have the tie even if you preprint the directions , once your off track your screwed and you don't know where you are and there is nobody to ask.
i do have delorme streetmaps on my laptop as well which has a plug in dongle that does gps too.
These are my favorite brands of maps.
The detail in the DeLorme is just out of this world.

I also live by this one too, this one is easier to use in the car, and it highlights the county roads which often enough are the best ones to play on.

We got a Garmin last year as a gift, but I also have a BlackBerry 8800 with a GPS built into it. (A true GPS, not a cell tower triangulation type one.) I have Google Maps on the Blackberry, so as long as I have my phone with me, there's no way I will be lost. (Well, no way I can't be un-lost)
The coolest thing is that you can pull up the aerial photos on it, just like on the computer. It's almost like watching yourself in real time as you walk down the street from an "eye in the sky" view.
