Default Rear Ended

Well good and bad news from last night. Good news- both parties are alright and I was driving my beater 97' civic hatch. So here goes (must vent)... yesterday I come home from work and soon after my wife calls, telling me she'll be late and due to this we are unable to go to our friends house in Mass. to watch the game. Ok, so I figure I'm gonna go out to Sears and get back before the game starts.
I make my way to Sears driving my beater for the hatch space (buying new car jack). I'm stopped at the light just before entering Sears parking lot and WAM. I lunge forward, seatbelt holds me in. I thought I just lost the back of my car. I get out of my car, neck a bit sore and the guy who hit me gets out as well. I look over at him and I ask him if he's alright. He says ya so I ask for his liscence, reg etc. He looks at me as if I have two heads. He replies "I just touched you. My brakes didn't work so well so I pulled the ebrake." I didn't want to argue so I asked again, he went into his car 95' Jeep Cherokee and came back with the info. He got on his cell and started talking to some lady (turns out it's her car). While I'm copying down his info I ask him to call the cops. He was like wtf. I explained that you just hit my car.
Honestly the marks are not that bad on either vehicle. I was surprised cause the feel of the impact I thought I lost the back of my car. Some minor and major scratches are present. I was only concerned cause my neck was hurting. While we're waiting he informs me that he is a cop. Within 10 mins (surprised) a cruiser arrives. The cop comes over and is a real arse. He starts giving me crap as if it were my fault (I think they knew each other). My only concern was his id and all the paper work was under a different name. After the cop finished giving me grief another cruiser pulls up. Then the three of them are stading outside the last cruiser and I'm stading behind my car (two cars away). They talk look over at me then the second cop comes over and asks for my id etc. He proceeds to look through my car. What the heck, I did nothing wrong. I simply asked him to make sure that the other drivers info was accurate seeing that there were different names on his reg/ id. Less than a minute later he comes back to me saying everything is ok. Explaining CT law to me and how the damage is less than $1k so it's no fault. I said oh, well I would still like a police report of the incident.
The first cop drives off leaving the second to do the paperwork. He sites the other driver following to close and me not having my insurance card present. WTF it's right here in your hand. "Ohh well that's a copy" I tried explaining that it is the same thing, I bought the car less than a month ago. Finally I leave.
Later that night my parents call me (left them message) and I talk with my dad (lawyer for state of CT). He tells me that the insurance is BS not only that but the officer wrote my policy number down in his report. He advised me to call my insurance agent and see what to do. On Monday I plan on calling. Sorry for the post being long, but I had to vent.

Sorry to hear that, JS. Police, well police have better things to do ... Frikkin' cops.. Ah, don't get me started.

Glad you're OK, and you're absolutely right being a stickler for the rules. Damage notwithstanding, there's potential medical claims in an accident and for DAMN sure the cops should be aware of that.

Damn, sorry to hear Josh! But at least youre ok and you werent in your S. I wish i was in my beater when someone rearended me after a month of S ownership. Of course no one will hit my Sentra

OH, and west hartford cops seem to be the worst around here! As one of my hartford cop friends says, theyre nothing but grownup paid boyscouts. They have very little crime to deal with and do nothing all day but hangout at my buddies coffee-shop all morning on Prospect ave (Donut & Bagel Stop).
Ive seen upwards of 7 of them at a time there! Isnt there something you could do besides take up seating from the customers who are there on thier own time just trying to get thier coffee for thier daily morning work cummute?
