No jeff, no special bitterness today. Just ridiculous how they get the special OK to speed. I could spend thousands on defensive driving and hi-perf training and it would do me no good without a badge.
if i call the police for any reason at all you can bet that i want them there ASAP not 7 minutes not 10 minutes BUT ASAP

Jeff,
Not to be a butthead here, but how much training behind the wheel do you guys get? And how often do you have to re-qualify? I ask because I once worked with a guy who completed the "Ohio Peace Officer" course/license test. His class trained for one day in a parking lot with a rented car. There was more emphasis on reversing using the mirrors than on high-speed pursuit. Unfortunately, we have quite a history of fatal accidents caused by police officers chasing perpetrators who would have gotten off with a slap on the wrist had they been caught before the cruiser hit a civilian vehicle.

It included 2 days of classroom training on vehicle dynamics and how to apex and use throttle to shift weight of the vehicle and other stuff.
then the other three days were spent on the course which was fairly big at an old abandoned air strip.
They ran us through a large variety of courses from skid pads, high speed driving in reverse, J turns, slalom, threshold braking, controlled spins and all out high speed pursuit in darkness and lighted conditions.
It was an awesome week to say the least.
In the city, we pretty much practice daily because of the call load and type. No need to re-train since we do it daily. Some towns send their guys every few years from what I hear.
Mike,
I really don't understand your point. When there is an emergency, people want police/fire/ambulance there fast. Don't you? Should we drive slow?
We usually get bitched at for getting there too slow. Now no one wants us to drive fast?

You showed that there is like a 3 minute difference in the transit time between the speeds. Have you ever gone to pick up a bad guy and just missed him? Oh yeah, you don't go pick up bad guys. I do and I can tell you 3 hours or 3 minutes doesn't really matter if the guy gets away. Try to live with yourself if you let one get away and then he goes and f**ks some little boy in the a** because you didn't get there as fast as you can. Somethings are out of your control and they still weigh on your conscience. I like to go to bed at night knowing I did the very best I could every time.
Until you are ready to try the job yourself, you should be a bit more open minded. I would never sit here and tell you how I think computers should be programmed or what not. It is a lot easier to sit back a week after something has gone down and spend hours analyzing a decision that had to be made in less than a second some times.
I apologize if I have a confrontational tone. I just feel very strongly about this.
I have nothing wrong with acting fast, but it seems he went a little over the top here. Yes I do appreciate a speedy response to a 911 call or other emergency, gotta balance the risk though.
