16 million doesn't buy much these days. Those damned fire trucks take a lot of diesel and the crusiers don't run on bottled water.
Low taxes are nice, but you get what you pay for in services. My town is one of the most stingy there is, and I worry that it is not worth it sometimes. Safety is not something you want to gamble with. When you need it, it HAS to be ready. Pay now or pay later.

What, do you guys have 1 cop? Jesus, a fire truck costs upwards of half a million alone. Maintenance, fuel, sounds like you are asking for blood from a stone.

steve, funny that this just showed up in todays paper. Maybe reading it will help you get a better understanding of why police and even the firemen need new buildings some times. It's not just for a cosmetic update.

A school librarian came to our door last night with a flyer. It showed a list of proposed budget cuts for the school, some of which they say are acceptable, some of which they say are devastating to the school system.
I never know what to believe in these situations. Town, city, state employees should not feel as if they are immune to layoffs and cutbacks, when the private sector folks are losing jobs every day. On the other hand, if we aren't willing to spend the money to educate our children properly, and keep our community safe, what does that say about us?

i was ready to shoot myself in the head after town meeting
if the school does not get 27 million next year the kids will become retardard and they will have to have studty hall twice a day and 3 teachers will have to be laid off
oh and the school will lose it's acreditation
and that will drive our property values down
nothing but doom and gloom unless we give them MORE money

My plan is simple. Cops, firemen and teachers are all the same people. They get one salary and work for the town 24/7. If there are no fires to fight or bad guys to chase, they teach. If something bad happens, they run out of the class room and deal with it. Its like the old west. When the bank got robbed, the sherrif rounded up a posse. When the barn caught fire, the bucket brigade formed up.
