My plan is simple. Cops, firemen and teachers are all the same people. They get one salary and work for the town 24/7. If there are no fires to fight or bad guys to chase, they teach. If something bad happens, they run out of the class room and deal with it. Its like the old west. When the bank got robbed, the sherrif rounded up a posse. When the barn caught fire, the bucket brigade formed up.
my taxes are 4,300.00 now and if this passes it will be closer to 5k
wtf??!!!
You still might have a chance. Especially since the market crahsed.
There is a guy at work who supposedly files an abatement almost anually and always makes out. I don't know what is involved though. My anual taxes are only about $1500 so I don't get concerned with it YET.

I've often filed for abatements for the property where I work. The first time we lost, and we went to "abatement court" in Boston. The issue was reviewed and the abatement was granted. For years I filed EVERY year for an abatement and it would be granted.
The city tax rate and the property rate is now a little more realistic, so we haven't filed the past couple years.
In this city, abatements have to be filed within a certain time frame of the receipt of the tax bill, and the city/town setting the rate for the fiscal year. I'd guess it's the same in most municipalities.
Next time around, file for an abatement, Bass. Especially if you live near wetlands which mean you can't do anything with that area of the property. Property values are down, it's worth a try and it costs nothing to file an abatement.
I tried once. I tried to tell them the new ball field de-valued my property. They didn't buy it.

OMFG You guys cannot be seriously complaining about mill rates of around $15 per K
You dont even want to guess what our mill rates are up here. Lets put it this way if my mill rate was $15 I would celebrate and my taxes would be 50% less than they are now!!!
Last year they upped the assesments and lowered the mil rate to this Clicky
