I can speak for the CT end of Route 7, having grown up in Wilton. Suffice it to say that South of New Milford, Rt. 7 is just a very BAD idea. In Norwalk where it starts, it's all businesses and stoplights. North of that, in Wilton, it's completely under construction, and has been for a few years. They're widening the road, because the freakin' NIMBYs don't want to build an elevated highway through the town, they'd rather widen the road and cut the town in half.

North of Wilton, through Ridgefield and Danbury, the road itself is scenic, but the traffic is so bad you can't enjoy the drive. The reason is because there is no main road between Danbury and Norwalk/Stamford. So a lot of commuters tie up what should be a local road. Of course, if they'd built an elevated road like they'd wanted to for 50 years, that wouldn't be as big an issue as it is now.

But my point is, north of Danbury/New Milford, it's great. It follows the Housatonic, which is also scenic, through the Litchfield Hills and into the Berkshires. It's very scenic, twisty, hilly, and doesn't have a ton of traffic.

My sister is not traveling with us. MAYBE we'd hook up for dinner with her on the way up or back.

Find us something a bit smaller, cheaper, please.

That would be the area of interest to us, unless Dave convinces us to go to ME.

Thanks! And if you give me the names of some towns, I can do the research. We don't mind decent motels, but don't want a B& B. We're not B & B kind of people.
