Default Fuel gauge - cutting it close?

Tonight on my way to El Paso from Alamogordo to pick up my wife's mini from the dealership for service, I did what should be impossible, I drove about 40 miles on one/no bar of gas.

I have never pushed my fuel tank to the limits and have never run out of gas before. I was going to fill up in Orogrande but they only had 86 octane, and according to my wife, while I was in tech school when we had no money, she would drive the car for days on one bar. So I listened and we proceeded to Newman.

When I finally got to Newman the car only took 11 gallons. Now I know the S2ks fuel gauge is off, but damn, 2.2 gallons remain at way less than 1 bar of fuel.

Wierd.

Now I know for autocross and track days I may try and go with 2-4 bars.

They say you can go 50 miles once you see the last bar.
I never let my car go past 4 bars, not good for the pump.

You usually have a couple of gallons after the last bar.

Done something similar myself, years ago.

Does Octane have much to do with mpg or will it be negligable? Does anyone know where to get performance / racing fuel?
