Default digital fuel gauge glitch

i just starting driving the S on the road after warming it up for a minute when i saw that the fuel gauge was full. i thought it was weird because when i filled up yesterday, and yesterday night it was already down one bar.( i had about 10 miles on the full tank) i kept observing as i drove and then about a couple miles it went away. anyone ever had that happen to them? sorry i may sound like i have OCD but i just got this car 2 weeks ago and i just want to make sure my car is perfect

Gas guage is pretty inaccurate, especially during the last 1/3 of a tank.

Also, outside temp plays a roll in how much fuel is actually in your tank. When it's hot, some of the gas turns into gas..when cold, some turns to liquid. That will give you different readings.

Also depends on the pump you used. Sometimes, I drive 40 miles and show full. Sometimes, I drive 10 miles and lose a bar.

The fluctuation you describe is normal and sometimes you can "gain" or "lose" a couple of bars if you are on a hill.

Our fuel gauges are interesting indeed. I've come to the conclusion that the only thing you need to know is that when the low fuel light comes on, that means there is exactly 8.4 liters / 2.22 gal left in the tank. I've pulled into gas stations exactly as it came on, or a few moments after; and the low fuel indicator is pretty accurate.

What I've noticed is...

car on downslope - gas gauge goes up
car on hill - gas gauge goes down

even on small grades

What you described with the 3 bars in 30 miles as happened to me after my car was parked on a downslope.

I have come to the conclusion that the gauge "calibrates" itself when you start the car. If you are in a parking spot that is on a slope (most are anyway), it usually reads different than when you parked. As previously stated, it doesn't need to be a severe incline.

In the summer time i fill up when the light comes on...well within 10 miles and its always 10 gallons. So I would say that the light coming on with 2.22 gallons left would be accurate.
