Default Emissions/Inspection testing in NJ

Hey Guys,

I'm due for a new inspection sticker with about two weeks left. Just curious, what's the rules for mods on the car? I have the basic bolt-ons: K&N intake, Berk HFC and Fujitsubo exhaust.

When I first got my car two years ago, it was stock so passing inspection was not a problem. Just wondering how stringent they are with modifications? I don't recall them lifting the hood.... altho I do seem to recall them using a mirror to check underneath the car? I suppose even tho I technically still have a catalytic converter, it's not the OEM one. Can they fail me based on just that?

I plan on taking it to the state testing facility in Paramus, NJ. Should I consider a private garage for less hassle? The check engine light is NOT on. Throw out some garage recommendations if you can. Thanks fellas.

Jeff

go on the nj dmv website and it shows wat to check for before u go to inspection. as long as u have a cat with no check engine light u are good. if ure exhaust is not too loud u mite be ok. id suggest putting on stock exhaust just in case.

There's a good chance you will pass. Worst case, if you fail, you have like 45 days to come back to get reinspected.

I think the HFC is fine. What about all those older cars that get universal catalytic converters as replacements? I've dealt with those and never had a problem.

I've heard about those universal catalytic converters being used on older cars. Then again, isn't there a law or regulation on how old a vehicle has to be before using one of those cats?

I do have my stock cat available, but I was hoping to avoid having to swap them out if I could. I suppose, worse case scenario, I still have a backup plan. I just want the least amount of hassle as possible.

Just curious, if I fail at one of those State Inspection stations, can I attempt to go to another station in another town? Do they keep records for how many times you failed inspection and what location?

you should pass. the fuji isnt loud and the hfc is a cat, so its street legal and should pass emissions. k&n are carb legal. i passed with mine on. they dont pop your hood anyway in nj.
