Have to see it before I can understand what this means, but many times last season qualifying was more exciting than the race.

Am I reading this correctly? will all of the cars be on the track for the whole Q session? Wild

^ I think you are right in that their idea is to make qualifying more exciting. They want more cars out on track and right from the start.

Interesting, but of all things, I never thought the qualifying was the boring part of F1.

I know they have increased the sound of F1 cars now ... but to really shake things up, let's have refuelling back. Currently, the drivers are forced to nurse the car too much making for boring racing, less strategy.

The 'nursing' is more due to the nature of the tires IMO. Pirelli was given the mandate to build a tire that loses grip the harder its pushed so that drivers make more pit stops. But drivers are being more conservative and making the tires last by driving to a delta. So the tire 'strategy' back fired as soon as teams figured out how to make them last longer.

Huh...I kind of liked the old format. Wonder if this means you'll have more cars sitting in the garage just waiting to get that one hot lap in.

Also, with a driver being eliminated every 90 seconds, you could be on a hot lap and get bumped out before completing your lap. Don't like that. Could really be a factor at some of the longer tracks on the circuit (Singapore, COTA, Abu Dhabi) where a single lap can go longer than 90 seconds.

Maybe I'm wrong. I'll be interested to see how it plays out.

I agree with Bor Jace. Quali was often the best part of the race weekend. Why mess with it? I guess it could work but it seems a logistical nightmare with cars in the pits/garages coming out late and really screwing up the previous "bumpees?" What if late arrivals to the session are the slow ones and someone else already was "bumped" are they are now out of it?

New qualifying format may be put on hold until later in the season owing to software complexity

Czar Bernie's response in that article doesn't seem at all related to what I understood of the new quali proposal? Was there any claim to reverse grids or penalties for being fast in the proposed format? Has he gone madder!

A lot of F1 fans are scratching their heads about how this would work.

Then I hear that the F1 ruling group approved it and it seems they didn't think it through.

The ultimate auto racing sport is in shaky hands I think
