Anybody notice the cops got lazers?
About three years ago I invested in a Passport 8500 radar detector. A wise move considering I had just purchased a new WRX. On numerous trips along I90 / I81 back and forth to Canada I never got lazed at all. Then starting about last Thanksgiving I got lazed for the first time. Now I have my bright yellow (poorly running) S2K I seem to get lazed more frequently than I pick up Ka band. Is it just me, or did state troopers in our are get a consignment of lazer guns?
Has anyone tried one of the lazer jammers under the licence plate? If so, what brand and how well did it work? Also, will it hook into my current radar detector?

The NYS police have had lasers for several years now. I've noted them more around the Rochester area than other places in the state but they do use them all over. As for radar bands, I'm not aware of anyone using X band in NYS but have seen it in Ohio and PA, among others. The local and county police (Rochester) seem to use K band while troopers use Ka.
Speaking of lasers, watch out for GM SUVs - they use a plasma type 3rd brake light that will trigger the laser detector. I've also had some false warnings that seem to have been due to the HIDs being reflected by plate glass in front of me (gas stations, shopping malls). I can't be sure but that's all I could see.
As for jammers, all the tests of various jammers I've seen over the years have lead to one result - save your money. I don't recall seeing one specifically for laser, however...

The Laser officer will only target the front plate or lower making your detector up on the windshield late on getting a read if any warning at all since the Laser beam is very narrow. I have a Escort shifter that has not been street tested yet but has good reviews. Requires permentant mounting of 3 lens all close to the plates. If my V! tells me its a laser it means it is time to pull over and pay the piper.

1) I have no front plate.
2) The laser beam output I've seen diagrams of is actually 3 vertical elliptical beams and is not that tightly focused (but certainly much more focused than radar).
3) Because of #2, the detector will alert you at the moment of being shot.
4) I got shot yesterday on I-490 near Victor. Fortunately, I knew the cops always sit there, saw the car and started braking (barely) before they shot me. It was close but enough. He pulled a minivan behind me by a couple hundred yards.

My cousin is an officer in Phoenix AZ. and if he pulls someone over for speeding and sees they have a radar detector he will absolutely issue a speeding ticket because you are deliberately going over speed limit. If you don't have a detector he will be more apt to let you off with a warning.

Cops in upstate NYS dont generally seemed to be that annoyed about radar detectors (at least in my and my friends experience). If you have a good detector and good reflexes you shouldnt get caught, unless they get you with instant on. Good luck with the not using one approach
