Default Plane + smart phone = help

When on plane they tell you to turn off your electronic devices
Can I not use my Droid for all those other things besides phone and web?
I need to work on KSRT and I have route data on Droid as a PDF
Can I not access this data while on the plane?
And what is the plane icon on one of the home pages, what does this do if I turn it on?
Help all you smart people, my phone is smart, I never claimed to be...

So that brings up the question, why do they want you to turn off your electronic devices?

Droid forum very helpful, seems the FCC does not want the phone activated, and if the plane offers wifi I can connect to that. Looks like I’m all set. Airplane mode it is and I'll still be able to get things done.

I've never turned me phone off for a flight. I turn off the radio but never the unit. I use mine for games and work.

Pretty sure this rule was implemented more when analog phones were popular as they would cause interference, digital phones shouldnt harm the plane at all, but Airplane mode will turn off any celluar radio inside the phone and still allow you to access all games files ect ect during supersonic flight

They just want you to turn off the equipment because they want your undivided attention during pre-flight procedures.
...at least thats what I believe.
