While we're on the subject of 3G phones, can someone what 3G means and how that differs from a non-3G phone? I don't have the time to keep up on the latest phone technology.

3G is the name of high speed data on a GSM network.

It's not only high speed data for online surfing from your phone...but it also provides many, many more voice channels and can help a cell site with the volume of calls...making it more efficient. 3G is actually more efficient to operate than EDGE.

So...it's GSM...then EDGE (2G) was the data transmission...now it's 3G. Next is 4G.

3G is not in every market. T-Mobile is currently deploying 3G in all markets and it should be mid-2009, late-2009 when all markets are 3G.

Just in time for everyone to want 4G.

Here's a cool YouTube video showing 2G (EDGE) versus 3G.

The 3G in the 3G iphone will not operate on T-Mobile's network (in the USA).

T-mobile's 3G network operates on a weird 1700 mhz band that no one else in the world operates on.

The 3G bands in the 3G iphone are 850, 1900, and 2100. So, you will be buying a 3G phone without the 3G capabilities while on T-Mobile. The Original iphone has the same features as the 3G iphone minus the 3G and GPS. That is why people are still buying the original iphones....

Point being, even if the 3G iphone gets unlocked, it is pointless to use on T-Mobile's network =)

I did the same thing. Sold mine on craigslist for more than my 3G.

I've never heard about the 3G iPhone not working on T-Mobile's network (for data)...but imagine's post seems logical.

The G1 is a good device. I like using mine when I'm not on my BlackBerry.

I also heard that Edge internet is much slower than 3g, almost like regular dial up? (if I were to use the new iphone with t-mobile). So maybe I'll just stick with the G1
