Default 4 day work week vs 5 day -

Apparently some local governments are allowing people to work 4 10 hour days instead of 5 8 hour days so they can supposedly save the gas $.

I personally think it is a dumb idea.....

I would guess with that extra day at home the people will drive nearly as much to do errands, gym, etc....

Also, after sitting here for 8 hours i am less likely to work hard for those last 2 hours.... not that i ever work hard but.....

I would maybe think it was a good idea if the employees had a really long commute and there was some way to measure the work for the week and compare it to a normal 5 day workweek....

I'm all for packing in more hours in fewer days and having more days free to myself.

I'm all for it. I'd much rather bust my ass a little harder and have an extra day off. This would only work for some jobs, though. I think a lot of office/corporate jobs could pull this off. They could even institute a work-from-home program for the "day off".

All these companies, including the one I work for, proclaim that they are "green" but none of them actually do anything to back up that statement.

Heck, my office (I'm a lawyer) makes us come back after appointments or court appearances even if we get back at 5pm (we leave around 5:30). They just want you to show your face. Complete waste of time and gas.

Either way, the American worker is grossly overworked and underpaid these days. The extra day would do wonders for mental health and families as well.

I would much prefer to work 4 days rather than 5, but I often come in on Saturday anyway on my own choice so who knows what I would do with that much free time.

My wife works a 4/40. Seems like a good thing if you can hack the longer days. On the downside, as a manager, she ends up putting in extra time on some 5th days.

the way my work is set up, is that we work an extra hour each day and every other friday is an off day.

its great when it hits a holiday cause we also get a family day, so in the end we have a 3 day work day, lk last week.

friday-monday off
tuesday-thursday worked
friday-sunday off

and get paid the same.

off-topic, how do you get a government job? from what i hear, they're usually pretty laid back and very structured with superb benefits... and nearly impossible to get fired from.

I'd love to work 4/10s. That said, when I was at Halliburton, they tried it and they found people were usually still leaving after 8 or 8.5 hours and productivity was actually dropping. Without any checks and balances, it's probably not a good idea for many places.
